What exactly does the "cargo" value do in defaultcore.txt??

I've not been able to confidently say exactly what it does, if anything.

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but the cargo value on a ship (in SFC 1, EAW and OP) is a part of the damage it can take;  On a DAC, if you were to roll and hit 'cargo,' and you HAVE a cargo value, a point gets subtracted from that value.  It essentially absorbs damage.

A better string like "hp" (hit point) could have been used rather than *snicker*   "cargo." Programmers...I'll never truly understand them.

But that would just cut off all ties to SFB then, wouldn't it?

Cargo adds strictly to the mass of a ship without adding to it's "hit points".

This is used for Freighters to make them move and turn slowly like freighters
without having a ton of "hit points" like a battleship.

Makes perfect sense now, dosen't it.

Thanks,

Hehe, sorry but I had throw in some RPG flavor into the thread. Foolish things are sometimes said on my part just so that I may be corrected by more knowledgeable folks such as yourself. This is one way I learn new things.

Obviously, I've never played Amarillo's SFB....

Yes and no.

Are you saying that now (in SFC3), the cargo value in said .txt file affects only the turn rates of ships? Holocat mentioned earlier about it being a factor on damage absorbtion in prior SFC incarnations. Since SFC3 offers multiple levels of armor (I - V), I would imagine that the "cargo" value no longer has such an effect. Am I on to something here, or am I missing the target?

In sfc 1, EAW and OP there's an armour value too.  It acts more like 'hitpoints' than cargo does in said games.

I'm not positive that SFC uses a DAC, to tell the truth, but it seems likely.

Cargo may have 'hitpoints,' but they don't nessisarily need to be depleted for a ship to die, so they're not quite hitpoints.

I never heard of SFB myself before SFC, but to tell the truth, I kinda like it.

Cargo add's to the ship mass (mass affects speed and turn like adding a bigger warp does) WITHOUT adding to it's "HP"
Yes, SFC3 uses a DAC and no you cant hit "cargo spaces" like in previous SFC's

Xantim's right. While Cueball was coding BattleClinic and i was shooting bugs, i noticed that the Borg ships were very fast. Apparently the Cargo Space adds mass wthout doing anything. When Cueball added cargo space to the mass calculation, the speeds turned out the right way.

Surely the cargo space has a direct effect on the size of the bar fridge you can install...?

Yea, after i mentioned to you korah about the bioship I had a play with the cargo space values myself. Once borg armour is gone the hull strength till takes a while to work down, the only factor i could see that was different for them was the cargo space figure. But i now know that doesnt effect hp's. If anyone has an idea what it might be, id be grateful.
