Hope this isn't usurping any other post.
This is a day that holds a special place for me. My father and his two brothers took part. They are all gone now but I remember them, the sacrifice they made, the courage they had to put their lives secondary to making right a wrong. It is not something we see nowadays. When I joined the army in 86, I had that patriotic vision of self-sacrifice for the greater good. After two years it was gone. Could not hold up against the tide of self interest and apathy.
I guess it was a more nieve, simple time. For all the faults of it (racism, intolerance, sexism) there was a sense of unity and common purpose. Would I like a return to it? No, unless the faults were taken care of. Still kinda nostalgic...
