SFC aka ST: SFC problem
« on: March 02, 2003, 05:17:04 pm »
Can I get help here for a SFC (1, if you like)  problem?
It is quite a complex story, imo anyway. I have windows XP / P4 2.66 G / 512 Ram / Rad 9700 Pro; and can't get SFC to work decently on my system. I can get it to work with my config setting on primair, which works good untill all the fireworks start, the game slows down to a crawl whenever phasers are shot; so I tried running my config on my radeon drivers but that causes the game to crash before I get the loading screen, I read on a support page that setting wireframed to 0 or 1 in the SFC.ini file helped, it did but the slowdowns stayed and there was graphic corruption all over the place.
Is there something I can do to overcome these problems or will I have to bury my copy of SFC?

I never could get SFC1 to run on XP. It always CTD'd. Ran fine on 95 and 98, and on a slower computer to boot. I gave up and gave it to my nephew(future D2'er ).

I don't have WinXP, and know next to nothing about it, but wasn't there something about running it in Win98 compatability mode (or whatever the compatability mode is)?  I seem to remember a lot of people refering to that.

Try my instructions that I have available on my web site at

http://www.nightsoftware.com/effhq/sfc12.html

I have step by step instructions on how to install SFC 1 with special instructions for XP users on site..

also make sure your wWindows Xp is up to date at the windows update site, and that your Direct X is up to date (version 9).. SFC 1 works fine on Direct X 9

also make sure you are using the correct Ship Spec file (available for DL within the patching instructions along with the patches and also make sure you get the SFC REG file I have available there so that you are able to play on GSA...

Finally, I have a majority of Taldren created missions available there, including mission fixes that were made by Taldren (14 East) after the 1.03 patch came out...

I hope that this helps your problem....

On your site in the end you talk about 2 files that I need, what is the second and what does it do? Could it help my problem?
I've done everything that you put on your site besides running that file, and so far no change.

The 2 files are only if you are experiencing a problem with your version of XP not recognizing the CD in your drive for single player...

If you are experiencing this, then Email me at pestalence@startrek.net and I will send you a fix for it...

you may also look on a search engine like Google or Dogpile for Windows XP Tweaks and look up information on ending un-necessary system processes to free up your system memory to allow the game to run smoother....

You may want to also kill some of your start-up programs (the stuff that loads up next to your system clock on your task bar).... to stop those programs from loading at start-up... use the start button and go to run... type in 'msconfig' without the ' marks.. go to the start-up tab and uncheck the programs there.. you will want to leave at least  the "tpwrtray" and any video drivers that may load there...

Hope that this helps...
