I am new on here. I just purchased SFC2: EAW(I know - it's only been out for almost 4 years now - guess I'm not a trendsetter)
Overrall I LOVE it but I'm having one BIG problem.  I remember in the demo, when I was setting up the skirmish, I could pick from choices of the space terrain I could fight in(small, medium, large amount of space - asteriod field small, medium, large, etc, etc)
In the actual game's skirmish mode I can't figure out how to do this.  There seems to be only one default (SMALL) map that I can play a skirmish on. And quite frankly I'm getting sick of running out of "space" when trying to flee from a missile laden Mirak ship while my point defense widdles them down. I'm using the game "out of the box".  Do I need to download some mod just to be able to have different map sizes and textures to select from?
Sorry if this has been "asked before a million times" or something like that but I tried searching the forums first for any posts of someone with a similar problem but perhaps I searched under the wrong keywords.
I suppose I SHOULD check my manual but I didn't get one - I bought a "used"(apparently translates to : "no manual") copy from a seller on Amazon.  Then I bought a SECOND COPY "JUST TO GET THE FREAKIN MANUAL" because that ad said: "brand new in factory sealed retail box" but it didn't have the manual either!?! Gee I thought all games that are ACTUALLY brand new from the factory are supposed to have everything they're supposed to have in them including something as basic(especially for a game this complex) as the manual.
Any help would be appreciated!

(Fed photon torpedo factory forman - yes it's my fault they can't hit the side of a nebula)

PS. I've tried clicking on the map screen on the skirmish set-up screen, right clicking on it - everything short of putting my fist through it

You can't do it in single player skirmish ( a huge step back from SFC1 IMO). If you want to be able to do that you need to click on Multiplayer, then click on Connect in the lower right hand corner of the next screen, then Create on the next screen. This will bring you to the Multiplayer Senario Creation screen where you can pick the type of senario you want to play and you will be able to set the Map Type, Size, Game Speed and Era. The senario "Free For All" is the basic Hostile Skirmish set up, but there are other fun ones in there as well. There is a description of each one in the text window on the right, just click on the senario name to get that. After you choose all that you click on Announce Game and you will have a screen show up that gives you the ability to choose your ship(s) and create AI opponents to fight. You will see a small icon to the left of your name. In the blank slots, click this icon to choose the AI name you want (I think there are three choices) for that slot. To choose ships for them, click on the little starship icon on the right on the same line as their name. Each "player" can have up to three ships each and you control the loadouts etc.... You do not have to be online to do any of this. There is a lot of stuff in there, but if you take the time to poke around a bit it becomes relatively clear what you need to do.

Would it be possible to take the MP "Free for All" script, recompile it as a single player skirmish script, and keep all of those features?

I doubt it. Those features are a function of the interface, not the scripts.

Correct.
Why not go to multiplayer, and host the script without any other players?
