ALL PLEASE READ!!
« on: June 30, 2004, 02:28:41 pm »
Yes I'm still alive..  OK now to the topic! I have noticed some of my models on the net have had the read me files taken out of the zips! This is WRONG!
I have  found models of mine hear on Dynaverse for download with no credit or a read me file in them to give credit. Now i have to email them and have them give Credit to me, and i should not have to be doing this!

I know for a fact that i put readme's in ever model file i have ever put up for download. if you are a kitbasher or a mod maker, Please keep the read me file with the shipfiles at all times so we can get credit for are work.

Thank You.... SkinMan  ;D

Excellant point. Great to see you back but I wish it was to post a new model  :P

I gave permission for inclusion for ships as well and thought it understood to keep the reedme files in. I know you all want to keep you mod file downloads as small as possible but a readme is like 1kb and important.

I will make a point to add to my readmes that the readme must be included with the ship if its added to a mod. I didn't think this was necessary but ah well.

One of the problems is that mod creators are creating combined readmes.

Another way to credit would be at the bottom of the ship desrciption in the Vessel Library. My mod will have a combined readme with all credits for ships, missions, artwork et all  . Then a seperate readme for all ships. Then a individual readme in each ship folder. Then ship credits in the Vessel Library. Now I won't be having a ton of ships initially. Mods are a great way to showcase ships. Though most who play probably don't bother reading all the readmes. Thats why I like the Library credit idea. It doesn't clutter things up either as they still need to scroll down to the bottom to read them.

Agreed Skinman, and I also sympathize with Cue here.  I have noticed alot of SFC3 mods that have taken out the readme, and have gone to making a full readme for the mod.  Although the full readme is fine for the mod, and advertises the modler, if these models are transfered around the actual modeler name is lost if the readme is not in the file.

Skinman, or any modelers that see ships you have done that are not properly credited, please PM the site and request that they be changed for proper credit and send the readme's into them so they can be fixed.  This is important to keep the integrity of this community on course.

Also please realize folks that the Battleclinic site was done very quickly by Cue and a few others, and was still a work in progress when Taldren went down and Cue was drafted to get this site up very quickly (basically overnight), so please be patient with that site.  He is still working very hard on this.  If you see one of your models not properly credited, please let Cue, Kane or even myself know in a PM and we will get it fixed up eventually.

Or pm me..... We can't do a thing about people saying their ships don't have the proper credits, when we don't know what ships they are referring to.

Sounds like everything is all on track. I better see how these easily these things happen now. Most anyone who has been in the forums awhile would recoginze Skinmans work right away. Though any newcomers would have no idea.

I appreciate all the work involved in the mods you guys put together. Had no idea how much time is required till justrecently.

You know, I make a lot of mods, never released them though... when I put ships into a big zip or RAR (for separation and relocation), it will weird out and keep asking to rewrite over the same file... I hit 'ok' not realizing what happened... I had allowed it to destroy all the ''readme''..  ;DI have since gone through all the sites of you guys and read through on here, and did the same thing, just made a list that sits in the Models folder...
just saying, maybe that's what happened to them that you saw...
sorry that happened, we appreciate all your work, modelers, texturers, and kitbashers!!!!!!!! :notworthy:

I went to great lengths to ensure all the models I used in SFB_OP_04 are completely original and unchanged, right down to folder structure where present and including text files of course. I have also credited everyone concerned in the installer acknowledgements. Please let me know by PM or e-mail if I somehow unintentionally removed anything that should be there (pretty sure I haven't). I appreciate all the effort by modelers a great deal and it should definitely be recognised.

I find this very odd in my opinion.  Granted, I can see Skinmans concerns about the integraty of his art, but for my models (which I'm almost certain most people here could give a sh@t about as most are based on SFB universe and are not based on old TOS concepts) I could care less if people don't have my read me file in them or not.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but can someone please explain too me why this is such a big deal with SFC models that are basically free???

I think it's just a matter of taking pride in one's work and getting recognition for it. Sort of a gentlemens agreement / "copyright" of sorts.  I don't think its that big a deal and is easy enough to include the readmes, its actually less work - I'd have to click at least twice to delete a readme file... ;)  Also it helps to avoid arguements over "stolen" work. I know they're free but some put hundreds of hours of work into it - its obvious. You may not want recognition but most modelers do. That's my view of it.

I'm mildly confused about how your models being based in SFB would differ from TOS concepts... usually TOS ships are much closer to SFB ships than the TNG/Enterprise style models. If you've got models that are truer to SFB than what I've found on Fleetdock13 then could you kindly provide a link sir? I'm still keeping an eye out for truer SFB style models for SFB_OP_05... thanks.

These models may be 'free' but they are still the modeler's property. We mainly release these ships to the public as a curtesy, the least the community can do in return is to respect who built them. Most include readme files so people will know who made the ships, and to help keep others from 'stealing' the work. Removing the readme file from a ship is like erasing the name off someone's homework. Sure, the author knows who did it, but nobody else will. Besides the fact that most modelers aren't too fond of other people taking credit for their work as these ships have a lot of time and effort put into them.

Well said WZ.

Even the worst of us still take pride in our accomplishments, and just getting a model to resemble an ST ship, much less be able to hp/dp, convert to .mod and releasing is time consuming. Keeping readmes with the model/mod is small payback to the creator. Some of us, myself included (forget to include in some releases) are a little freer with our work, but that doesn't mean we want to go to another forum and see our model claimed by someone else. That's one of the reasons a lot of the best ones left Taldren...I hope the same thing doesn't happen here. :(

I think this issue has been addressed.  The problem has been solved.

Why continue putting in your 2 cents?  The jar is full.

If you noticed your ship on a site, DOWNLOAD it first.

If you noticed that your readme is missing,  SEND the person who is running that site a PM to fix it.

GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO FIX IT FIRST BEFORE SPAMMING THE FORUMS WITH THIS BS!!  ::)

thank you.;)

Hey Bonk, if you curious what my SFB ships are like, go over too Fleetdock 13 (http://www.strategyplanet.com/sfc/omega/fleetdock13/) under "Section 1" or my ships.  What I mean by them being "Based on SFB" is that I based the designs off of SFB written material and SSD's.  Ya see, I like the TMP era of Star Trek and when I played SFB years ago, I always invisioned SFB being a TMP style universe.  These models I have at FD13 are my interpretation of this.  Yes, SFB is actually based on the TOS era, and I do not mind TOS, but I do agree with B&B  ::)  that the Enterprise and a lot of the Special Effects remind me of toys instead of Huge vessels.  I grew up watching Star Trek 1,2, and 3 and loved the designs of the ships and the special effects.  I wanted to make some SFB ships based on these concepts.   ;D

lol I Know what you mean, like the styrofoam rocks and cheesy fight scenes, that was part of the charm of TOS for me.

Waiting to download your models now, I definitely want to take a closer look. Thanks for the explanation of your interpretation.
