To ease the confusion for patching SFC 3, I have created a single file installer for Out of Box to v531 patch.

Here are the Official usage Instructions :

1) Uninstall Starfleet Command III using Add / Remove Programs file in your Windows Control Panel.

2) Delete the SFC3 game folder off of your system.

3) Reinstall Starfleet Command III from the game CD, do not install Direct X 8.1 and do not install Gamespy Arcade from the Game CD, just the Starfleet Command III game itself. Comonly the install folder is C:\Program Files\Activision\SFC3.

4) Check for the latest version of your video card drivers from the manufacturer of your video card. For Geforce cards, check the NVidia web site, for Radoen cards, check the ATI web site. Never get video drivers from a place that is not the manufacturer of your video card. If you own a laptop, please check with the manufacturer of your laptop for updated drivers.

5) Make sure your version of Windows is up to date. Go to microsoft's windows update and get all available updates for your Windows Operating System.

6) As a recommendation, Download and reinstall Direct X 9.0b, if you do not have Direct X 9.0b, it is strongly recommended that you update to Direct X 9.0b or you will cause others to crash in Gamespy Arcade or Dynaverse 3 servers. Direct X 9.0b is not compatible with previous versions of Direct X under direct play and people using Direct X version older than 9.0b will cause players who have upgraded ( 90% of players) to have severe in game lag, locked loading screens, or Crash to Desktop issues. This is stated in the Microsoft Direct X FAQ. Installing an older version of Direct X on top of Direct X 9.0b will cause Direct X 9.0b to corrupt.

7) if you are running an Anti-Virus, please disable it until after you finish patching the game.

8) Download and install ONLY the v531 patch installer below, this is a stand alone installer and does not need any other Starfleet Command III downloads. This file is to be used on a clean, unaltered, unpatched version of Starfleet Command III.

(German version will not work on US/UK servers.. German Version will only work on German based server. German based server kits are available for download if you care to run a German server. Otherwise, download the US/UK version ofthe patch to join the US / UK servers.)

Size : 30.2 MB

9) Near the end of the install Process, a file will open stating the v531 Readme information, this file will be located in your SFC3 game folder after patching. It contains all the trouble shooting tips for Starfleet Command III. The file name is SFC3 Readme v531.rtf.

I am having a problem with this patch. I download it and try to apply it. All it does is open a window and then close. I thought it might be a bad download so I downloaded it again. Same problem. Also I cannot delete the file as it states that it is in use by another person or program.
System Configuration
Intel based p4 2.2GHz
1gb memory
ATI Radeon 9600 video
Windows XP w/ service pack 1
HD space available on drive where patch is located is 80gb

I have Nortons installed but disable during install
I have popup blocker installed but disabled

No other software running except for normal processes in Windows

Starfleet Command 3 is a fresh install

Any ideas????

Uninstall SFC3...

Delete the Sfc3 folder located in C:/program files/Activision

Reinstall SFC3

Re-download patch (again)

Disable antivirus software

apply patch

It should work after deleting the Sfc3 folder and reinstalling

Also you may want to reinstall DirectX 9.0b just to make sure.

I would suggest that you run Ad-Aware 6 and remove anything that it finds and Spybot Search and Destroy and remove all the items that show up in red.. restart your system, then redownload the patch and try to use it.. it is possible that you have a Trojan on your system that is blocking Command Prompt applications.. Anti-Virus will not find Spyware Trojan Hijackers.

If this does not work, then I would suggest looking on the Microsoft.com website and use their search system and look up your problem.. it is possible that a registry setting may have been changed by spyware.

Finally you can try checking your protected system files.

to do this, you may need your Windows Install CD, so keep it handy.

Click the start button and click RUN.. type in SFC /scannow

this will launch Windows System File Checker and scan all your systems protected files in the Windows directory for changed and / or missing files.. if a file is changed, SFC will automatically repair it, but if a file is missing, it will ask for the Window's Install CD so that it can pull the file and put it back on the system.

well heres a new one for u maybe, had to redo my sfc3 due to a problem of my own.

cleaned it updownloaded the single installer for the v531. for once in my life on dial-up i actually got decent download speed averaged 10kbs. well went to start it after downloading and blam a neat and very uncool window popped up. not a valid win32 app. now i just suspect its cause i am on win98se maybe. well anyways i know it worked before the two part download however like an idiot i had already deleted the files.

just thought u might have some input on the invalid win32 app thing, plus maybe a good chuckle too while reading it. but thanxs for ur patch i have a bunch more work on my mod to do know.

. oh just incase u r wondering its an all wars mod. ie roughly over 1000+ ships from all kinds of scifi genres. mostly if its scifi and i can get it and convert them they will be in. i was at almost 800 ships when my first prob happened.

had a HD failure. and forgot to back up 20% of the work i had done. but anywho if there is anything u can think of why it would come up invalid win32 app . just leave a buzz here .

I believe that there is a server problem with the single installer file. Has anyone successfully downloaded the file in the last few days? Over the weekend there was a server outage where the file was unavailable. Since then, every time I try to download the file on dial-up, the download rates are impossibly high (over 20 kb/sec!). I just tried it now, and I am getting the same thing. From experience I know that when download rates are higher than normal, you are not downloading anything useful.

heres what happened next

well reinstalled the 2 step patch v500 then v531 , ok started up ran good. well i added my new models folder and added the defaults for it. started the game up went to the load screen and everything stopped

. now u ready for the real kicker

i had forgotten that i had saved the defaultcore.txt file as a tab delimiting .txt file just like defaultloadout.txt is.

so i am up and running again now.

just figured u would like to know. by the way love the patches did i mention. thanxs they r GREAT!!!!!!!

you know... im getting the same problem tuck is...
it goes to install with the dos prompt.......but then exits.... I can use dos with other things...just not with this.... xp has a very crap "dos prompt" if you can even call it that.... but I dont belive thats the problem.....i've used batch files for installers many times before...and this is the 1st time its happened

Use the download location 2 posts up.. it is a mirror that is available until my regular site is ready.

make sure that you are using the patch on a clean unpatched, unaltered version of SFC 3

I don't like the disrupute when you lose your ship.This is now a more harder game than OP I thought It was quite easy

Well I am not sure what is going on but I still could not use the singe file patch. I tried all the recommendations and still had the same problem. It would open a DOS window and then exit. I went back to the 2 file version and had no problems Very strainge.

As a side note, the downloaded file's icon is a DOS icon. Trying to run it from a command prompt results in a "Program to big to fit into memory" error. I have also downloaded it from the mirror location with the same results.

I am currently re-uploading the file tto the EFF HQ web wite... I willl post back when the file is available for download.

I will also check the file at the SFCx web site when I am done uploading to my web site...

in the mean time, there is a 2 patch method available in the thread started by Taldren Admin with the topic of Patch v531. You can try that method since you are having problems with this patch.

BTW, I created the patch in the v531 part of the 2 part installer as well.. so i am not sure why the single file installer did not work.. the single file installer and the 2 part patch v531 have the exact same files and installs the exact same way..

as such I don't know what is wrong there..

anyhow.. the single file installer in the first posting is available again.. just updated today and should work properly now ..

i am also uploading the german version now.. only the full German file will not be ready for another hour.

Uninstall SFC3...

you know... im getting the same problem tuck is...

BTW, I created the patch in the v531 part of the 2 part installer as well.. so i am not sure why the single file installer did not work.. the single file installer and the 2 part patch v531 have the exact same files and installs the exact same way..

as such I don't know what is wrong there..

anyhow.. the single file installer in the first posting is available again.. just updated today and should work properly now ..

i am also uploading the german version now.. only the full German file will not be ready for another hour.
