What's with all the hack attempts?
« on: May 20, 2004, 02:52:51 pm »
The couple of days, I've been getting this Stack Overflow attack (sounds like bad Pokemon, not that I think any of it's good) every fifteen minutes to half hour.

And some time before it was a rash of Subseven Backdoor Trojan attacks.  And then there was something else, too.

Is there some kind of trendy hacker subculture, where all the copycats and wannabees see some new virus or something and like envious children they all flock to do the same?

Annoying!   I hope they get instant carpal tunnel (syndrome) until they repent.

just do what I do, erase thier bank account, flag thier tax records at the IRS ( if they are U.S. citizens) and cancel thier subscriptions to porn magazines. [amateurs.]

SubSeven?  Oh, thats a fun virus to use for pranks

If you're getting subseven attacks, that probably means that you have the virus on your hard drive, and a hacker is trying to use it.  Beware, run an antivirus.

The buffer overflow is probably a worm trying to infect vulnerable Windows machines. Microsoft don't seem to be able to protect their stacks.

XP Sp2 has stack (buffer, whatever) overflow protection, when coupled with newer proccessors.  , be interesting to see if it actually works, and how long it takes for crackers to bypass it

Any half decent firewall will stop atacks, and of course decent antivirus + updates.

I'm always amused (and a little worried) at the speed of which varients and rewrittes are released by the writters, take sasser, it only took 2 weeks after the security release for that little beauty to rear its head, followed very quickly by 6 varients.

Yes. They're generally referred to as Script Kiddies (the ones who scramble to copy a successfull virus/worm).

On the one hand these punks are the bane of my existence. On the other, the bastagahs keep me employed....

Newer AMD 64bit processors.  Intel has not released the 64bit chips and did not implement the NX function.  Without the NX function that aspect of SP2 will not work.
