I was checking my email a few minutes ago, and I noticed I had an email from pneumonic81@apocent.com, which I thought was odd since Knox uses a completely different address now,  and the subject line says "WEEEEEEE!!!!", which also seemed very strange to me since on the few occasions I have correspended with Knox, he has never typed something like that, he always kept to whatever we discussed.

So I opened the email and here is what was written inside.

Argh, i  don't  like the plaintext

..btw, "22573"  is a password for archive

Attached to the email was a zip file called message.zip.  Now I was even further bewildered since the last time Knox and I correspended was back in mid 2003 when I was asking about using his SFC material.  Anyway I dowloaded the file and AOL automatically opens it and my antivirus fashes a warning that this file is infected with the Wmm32 Beagle virus, and then the file was destroyed.

This can't possibly be Knox doing this, one he's not that type of person, and two, APOC Ent. has been gone for quite some time.  Unless someone can explain to me what this might have been, I am going to assume it's somebody that got ahold of that address and decided to send out a virus to mess with people.

So watch out if you get an email from this address with an attachment BEWARE!!  It very well could have a virus.

That's what I figured was happening, I knew it couldn't be just me.  I'll never understand the mindset of someone who will send out a virus just to hurt others, no political statement, just for the hell of it, that kind of maliciousness just blows my mind.

Rogue. Its highly unlikely its Ricks doing. I've noticed alot of emails with a file attached which can be either 51k, 41k or 31k. All of these are virus files. The most bizarre email I've had so far is one apparently sent to myself from my own ntlworld email addy.

E-Mail spoofing, common problem with virus/trojans and spammers, if you look at the headers of the email you will see the address details in it wont match up.

Keep a good updated AV running and dont ever open any attached .EXE etc and you will be fine

I've also had quite a few, always with the attachment 'message.zip' - though I've never opened them

I just cant believe there's now a 'fan-club' for that prat who created the sasser worm.

All virus writers, and their adoring public, should be shot......end of story.

It is incredibly easy to send a false email from someone's address.  You don't even need their username or password.  I could send you a virus from P81's email if I felt like it.

I've once used email spoofing- it was for a prank to a relative.  I sent an email from bgates@microsoft.com

A friend of mine got an idea from that and sent a jerk an email from bgates@microsoft.com saying that he's going to get a million dollars for Bill Gates for the Bill Gates Fan Club he's the leader of, and all he has to do is walk outside and shout, "I LOVE MEATLOAF" five times over, and the people watching him will come out and give him the money

The scary thing is that he knew to use P81's name to email you.  It likely means that these are being sent from someone who has read these forums before.

I hear you, Rick is not capable of doing something like this, I figured it had to be somebody who got ahold of that email address.  The only explanation I would have accepted was that he was sending out emails to people and I just happened to get one with a virus.  Granted I knew that would have been a big stretch, but other than what I suspected this was the only other explanation I could come up with.

What really unnerves me is that this indivdual sent from an email address that I was likely to open, and I fell for it.  Thank fully by AV software is always kept up to date,  it saved my hide last night.

another thing I thought of is tht he might have the virus on his computer, and it autoomatically dialed out on its own! I have heard of advanced ones being able to do that... it might have logged his keystokes, then imitated it and sent out to recent... emails...

Actually, those viruses usually infect Outlook Express, then take control of that and start emailing themselves to everyone.

Another reason to purge Microsoft products from your HD.  All the viruses specifically target them.  If you install Windows, download a different browser other than IE, download a different email program other than Outlook, etc, you will be a whole lot safer as the viruses won't affect those programs.

That was the old way ... the new way is to build in a SMTP client in the virus code so that it's activities never show up in your Sent Items folder.

I do agre with you that Outlook Express is still more dangreous that it's worth and should never be used. Outlook XP/2003 is much better however and if you *have* to use a MS product at least it can block things better. Still needs finer controls but it's not as bad as it once was.

I still prefer Eudora.

Agreed.  I'd use Eudora (or Apple's Mail on my Mac), except that I don't like email clients anyway, so I just use web mail

i know about that virus, don't remember the name but i know it was not from pneumonic or anyone else, my antivirus always check the mail, the one i got the most is from Elene with the virus WORM_DUMARU.Z, the file is myphoto2.zip, and the email is f*ckENSUICIDE@HOTMAIL.COM, the email is a fake one i have check, if there was a way to found where the came from so the sender can be cauth, its good to have and antivirus but i don't like norton cause insted of scanning the email its blocking them and the mail doest arrived to my com, i will try again another one like panda, but not macaffe, its asking too many question just to try it.
