anything you discovered Setting It up that could be of use to others here? How about the Mobile drive Dock?

Raid is a weekend job for me. I've go tto save a lot of files and want to upgrade OS. The dock will require either that I free a bay by geting a combo drive or buy a 5 bay case and move my hardware. So I'm thinking I may put it in my old computer since it's primary purpose in life at first is to raid all my old hard drive I have laying around. Later I'll use it for secured storage on my primary computer.

98 SE with all service packs up until it was no longer supported.

What type of Raid are you going to set up, 0, 1, or 0+1 ?  Be careful with Win98se it can be a little flaky.

Raid 0 striped. I will probably buy and install XP. I've got 2 western digital 120G X8MB buffered hard drives. Though 98SE served me well, i'm begining to have trouble with certain things because of it. I hate the idea of going XP but Don't think I can hold out forever.

Wow I'm surprised you are using two 120gb drives, usually people use smaller drives for that kind of Raid set up.  Nothing wrong at all with using those drives, I'm just kind of surprised.  As for switching OS's have you thought about using Win2000?  I switched to Win2000 when I built my system and I love it.  Best of all Win2000 supports S-ATA, which is going to make Win98 obsolete.

Well I'm no where near an expert on RAID. This will be my first time and my choice of Raid flavor was guided by a MAX PC article on it. As to HD size I had 80s but the price difference was not that much now that the 250s and higher spin rate ones are out. The only reason for me to go lower would be if the extra space slowed my system down as a quirk of RAID operation.

I chose RAID 0 striped because it reads a file from both HD's simultaneously taking part from one and part from the other in parallel and with the bigger buffers  and separate IDE channels it is much faster while the double storage allows for redundancy and some protection against crashes causing data loss. That is my understanding anyway. comments?

Correct, the only thing I will add is that Raid 0+1 does both redundancy and speed, but requires four hard drives.  Most people will install the OS on a Raid 0 using small (10~40gb) and fast (10,000rpms) hard drives to increase system speed.  Large drives in a Raid 1 set up is usually used as a type of automatic backup system for critical data.  Please note, I am not stating that there is a right and wrong way to do this, I'm just stating common use.  If you are a "serious" gamer or do a lot of video/audio work on your system, Raid 0 is the way to go.  On the other hand if you do a lot of work on your system and want every safety net you can find to protect your data.  A Raid 1 setup is the way to go.  Other wise IMHO most people are just wasting their money.

Are you saying I need 2 more 120's to make this work? I was hoping to use those other IDE channels for secure data back up and optical media.

Only if you are doing datastriping AND mirroring.  From your earlier post you are not doing mirroring.

I don't know what RAID controller you are using but mine does not work on any other media but hard drives.  Fortunately I have the motherboards controllers as well.

I have A soyo systems KT400 Dragon Ultra Platinum MB with built in Raid controller and additional non RAID IDE ports. I think 4 RAID and two non RAID but I have not looked in a while and may be wrong, it could be just two RAID but that would make the the mirror drive system you mentioned need to use secondary channels which is a no no with RAID (for speed) IIRC. I could look but I'm too lazy to open my case right now. I have a couple of PCI slots open and could use additional controllers for non critical drives.
