This is NOT a fabrication...
« on: May 17, 2004, 08:50:39 am »
...I only WISH it was:

Ove the weekend my home computer died. All but a few old models were not backed up (stupid me). The really ironic part was I was going to finally get around to it THIS week. So a roughly a year's worth of collecting is likely gone.

What happened was, lately the computer has been freezing, so I did a manual shutdown (i.e. pressing the power button until it shut off. This happened after perhaps every fourth or fifth time I would be shutting it down.

So Friday afternoon I went to reboot after one of these manual shutdowns. I was watching that hard drive bar creep from left to right, showing me the percentage of the hard drive check, when just before it was done, the computer just switched off, came back on for half a second, then off again. I restarted again, only to have it happen again. It shut itself off. Now it won't come on at all. You have NO IDEA how mad I am...(but maybe some of you do).

FKN COMPUTERS!!!, I just hope that it is a case of being a faulty powersupply, cable, motherboard or even the motherboard beginning to undervolt.  My old Epox board when on its way out began to undervolt and I had freezing and rebooting problems because there wasnt enough power going to the cpu. Hopefully your problem isnt a hdd one and all could be well with a component replacement, good luck mate.

BTW I recognise EPOX as a SH*T stuff, I had once such motherboard and this was a failure... Yeah you're right sometimes PC's are stupid. It is difficult to match your hardware to a software...

Bad mother board, over heating can cause it check to see if all your fans work, also there is a worm out there that can cause this problem as well if you use XP or 2000 as a OS.

Hey folks!

Thanks for your input. I've not given it up by any means yet. Just trying to control my temper.
It might be an overheating issue. That will have have to check. It's probably not a worm as I'm still using Windows 98.

I may have gotten someone to take a look at it this week. Not not an expert by a long shot with this stuff and don't wanrt to really dig around where I might do more damage.

If it is an Overhitting issue try to acces BIOS by pressing the delete button on your keyboard. After that find there options to control automatic shutdown on high temperature. Tell me what kind of CPU and Mainboard you have got. I will tell you what kind of temperature you cannot exceed

Take Care

I don't know the Mianboard type I have. All I do know is that I have a 4-year-old Hewlett Packard (bought new in 2000).

And I'm afraid I don't know what BIOS is...I'm pretty computer ignorant.

Well what about Central Unit Processor?? What kind of it you have?? Is it a AMD or Intel one and how many MegaHertz it has got?? 1Ghz or maybe 900Mhz. You can find out this while watching your memory count at the beggining while you launch you PC...

Ive been having a simiular problem and having completly formatting my hard drive twice a virus was still there on my first reboot it was under the name of "avcs" and the second time ts called "wuamgrd" im not going to be formatting my pc a third time till im able to get a new hard drive and this time windows isnt touching it because im going to be on linux hopefully my problem wont arrise again but i recommend to any and all people who read this post to do a ful virus scan and firewall test with a standard disc scan and defrag with of course the typical disc clean up (symtoms include defrag and scan disc unable to finish and disc clean up not even working while it eats at ram and the inability to cancel unless you use the task manager and end the process manulay) going to linux will aslo affect my playablaty of SFC2, OP,SFC3 i will remain a member of the forum still and see all the great work and join in on the chit chat hopefully your pcs are safe

yeah Epox arent that [bleep], I mean the board I had, 8rda+ was just undervolting, I got a 8rda+ 1.1 back from Epox through the warranty and it was fine, served me well for over a year and now I'm on the ABIT NF7S mobo.  Soltek DRV mobo, well now that was a [bleep] board which had way too many issues.

I had been trying to get a Soltek SL-NV400-L64 board here in the States.  I gave up.  It seems Solteks don't make it as far as the U.S.   (I wound up getting the DFI NFII ULTRA-AL.)  I had heard good things about that particular Soltek motherboard.

So you had problems with your Soltek?
