Computer Performance Issue
« on: May 15, 2004, 09:39:02 pm »
So, as some of you know and some don't, I just finished building my new PC.  Here are the specs

AMD Barton 2800+
SOYO KT600 Dragon Ultra Mobo
512 mb Corsair XMS DDR400 ram
Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600XT (256mb)

I think that's all you know to know.
On to my question. Last night, I was playing Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, with NO slowdown whatsoever at max resolution. This morning, it was slow, choppy and unplayabe.  I rebooted and tried again, same thing. So I figured, maybe it's a heat thing. So I leave the computer off for a couple hours, try again, same thing. What's going on?

Could this be a voltage issue to the HDD? I switched around some of the internal wiring, and I'm not sure if that has the possibility to slow the game down this much.

Even after being off for a night it's still choppy as heck?

If it works fine after a long time off - get more casefans/airflow.  Could also be a memory leak in a program installed.  Run MSCONFIG and remove everything wierd from startup

Would you believe of all things, it was just that I was in a HUGE open area? I proceded to the next portion (inside a building) and its running fine again.

THANKS! lol

Oh dear, that doesn't speak good.  I had no problems with an Nvidia card, you shouldn't have any problems with the Ati Card...

Are your drivers current?

Seriously, you shouldn't be having problems running the game.

You try it at Max Res on dantoonie's wide open fields. It wasn't like I was at 800x600, I was at 1600x1280

Mate, you're trying to run mega-high res on an ATI card in an OPENGL game and you're wondering why you're getting problems?  At least knock it down 1280x1024 and give it a fighting chance!

As a side note, I hope to god ATI manage to fix their p*ss-poor OpenGL performance sometime soon. Despite them saying that they've cured most of the problems they still haven't quite got there yet. Its about the only thing stopping me from getting an ATI card.

Honestly, it's working fine now.  I wouldn't expect it to run perfectly in the situation I was in. I think ATi's really fixed all the major problems. Homeworld 2 runs fine at max res/details with shadows on. (this was a major problem for a while).

Now that I've had both ATi and Nvidia cards, I can safely say I would buy ATi again. And again.
