Magic Fed Regenerating Hull
« on: January 20, 2003, 09:51:49 am »
Maybe someone who knows SFC3's game mechanics can help me out here.

Yesterday I was playing on Nividion's server, flying Fed. I had a Galaxy with 2 AI escorts (Norway and Intrepid) when I got drafted by a Borg player in a Sphere Prime. He was well stocked with H-beams and Shield Inverters.

Midway through the battle I'm down to about 50% hull. He's around 70% but at this point his armor is gone and he's taking a pounding.  He says something about my hull regenerating. I'm thinking, "Oh great, here we go". I tell him I have no idea what he's talking about.

A few more minutes go by. He's taking more damage. I'm repairing weapons. My shields are also showing improvement.

He then accuses me of cheating  because he sees my hull regenerating. He disengages.

In the lobby this inDUHvidual then proceeds to tell everyone that I'm a   cheater.

Now I can tell you that having played since SFC1 I have never resorting to cheating. I have been accused of cheating on Diablo (which is par for the course) but never on SFC1 or 2. I fear this may be par for the course on SFC3 as well.

My question is, what was this turkey seeing? My impression of the "health bar" was that it just showed hull integrity and not weapons/power status, etc. Barring that I'm guessing it was either lag  or he was just full of it.

Any thoughts/comments appreciated.

Dear Fart-breather;
From my observations, just like in the prior SFC titles, the "heatlh bar" is NOT a measure of your actual hull, but your overall health. Therefore, as you fix a damaged system, or a shield comes back online, the health can and does go up. If you take heavy damage to your core, and it takes a while to fix it, as you fix it your health bar will go up.

If you watch ai ships, the same happens with them as you are fighting, are THEY cheating?

Tell your borg "friend" to go screw a lightbulb in his ass.

Have a nice day!

I think I know what happened.
Sometimes the server is badly out of sync, making you and the other player not see the same things. While you took damage, to the other it must have looked as if you had taken none. I've seen that a couple of times and it is a real prestigekiller. When someone starts shouting in the ingame chat system about a player whose hull didn't seem to be damaged, i usually tell them that this is due to a server synchronization error.

I have seen it the other way around as well. Another player seems to take damage, while his shields are up. I had someone frantically shouting that i took heavy damage with my hawk in a planet run, while my shields were nicely in yellow.

There are loads of other server sync errors, like the infamous no-power bug, the I-have-to-keep-bringing-up-my-shields-because-they-disappear-from-time-to-time bug,  the player-shoots-something-which-I-cannot see bug, the i-cannot-damage-that-AI bug and the lag-killing bug (on the last one: due to lag, the server fails to update your hull status, which means that you are ripped to shreds even though your hull is in yellow ).

You forgot the "I am being tractored at range 40" sync error, the "I am being tractored and taken out of warp" sync error and the "I am being fired upon at range 100" sync error.

All of the above plus the ones you mentioned have happened to me, and, I would daresay, to most.

AJTK hit the nail on the head. Tell your borg "friend" to learn how the game works.

FYI to all, the game is still PEER TO PEER, which means these sync issues aren't necessarily related to the server performance, but to your connections to each player in the mission, or perhaps the way in which the game connected each player at mission load.

7, you're playing SFC3?  Say it ain't so lol.  I think what happen was you were repairing so your status bar was going up and this guy thought you were cheating.  You ran into a zealous newbie.  Oh well, tell him to suck an egg (or something stronger).  See you out there.

I just think it's funny anybody playing as Borg would accuse anybody else of cheating...

Yeah...sure is annoying...when all these sync errors around.  I have other errors that kill me more than the sync error..like the freaking ".  .  .DLL exception error"  I do mean I have all kind of freaking DLL errors...and that cost my ship and prestiges.  Not to mention those shield disappearing acts...or hull damage will my shield still green...LOL.  When are they going to release the patch to fix this kind of problem.  And for those others that keep accusing of others when they should know is the program and not the player.

Have you upgraded to Direct X 9? Try getting the Direct X 9 (www.microsoft.com/directx/), then the SFC 3 DirectX 9 patch (www.activision.com) and check for updates to your video card drivers and see if this corrects your problem... at least your problem with DLL errors...

By the way, do you know how hard it is to type 'nyah' quickly?

Nobody mentioned the "get stuck at the loading screen while you can hear the other (Borg) player warp up to you and destroy your ship" sync error. Most humourous to get dumped back on the map in a frigate. Had a real good laugh about that one.

My advice is to ignore him; if you've played long enough, you'll be called a cheater by someone. I was accused of being one when I went on GSA right after the 2033 patch with my kudzu like model directory (everything under the sun) which caused the launch screen to have a fit. Of course, I was a model cheater.

We know who's trustworthy and who's not.

Hmmm~, I did upgrade my Direct X....but some reason..now I check it...it went back to the old ones...and that is really strange...god darn it....lets see after I updated again...will it happen...thx for the info...it sure make me look at my version numbers..

On the topic of sync errors, here's a doozie: One time, I managed to end up in control of and AI ship rather than my own. An AI from the OTHER TEAM. This was, of course, way too weird, and I think in that instance I was fully justified in alt-f4ing (no other humans were involved) as my own scimitar came hurtling at me as I sat I wondered why I was in an excelsior. This has only happened once, and MAN was it weird.
