Help with DSL

Hello folks, I was wondering if you could help me with a problem?

I have enjoyed playing single player SFC3 for quite some time now, and I want to see what it is like in multiplayer.  My problem is that I have a DSL modem for internet connection, and everytime i try to get in I get an error message about not having a static ip or something like that.  Do any of you know a way to work around this problem?  I am not behind a firewall, nor do i use a router.   I don't have problems connecting to any other online games, just SFC.

All help would be appreciated...

The first thing to do would be to investigate your DSL modem and see if it has an integral router/firewall. Then we can diagnose with the extra info.

Start by reading the manual.

Or look for the manufacturers ID plate, which should have some sort of model and manufacturer info on it. You can then search for manuals or help pages about configuring it based on that info.

Exactly what is the model number?

You can Telnet into the Modem/Gateway at 192.168.1.1 and access the filters to forward ports by the look of it.

Edit: Please read the manual carefully, and its probably a good idea to call your ISP before trying to change anything so you don't accidentally mess things up. (record all your current settings so you don't forget them etc...)

What Bonk said, with the emphasis on being careful and taking notes. You may even find that your ISP has kept the router password to themselves and you will need your ISP to tell you the password so that you can make the port forwarding changes.

Geez, I would have never thought it was so complicated.  I am not much on this router and port stuff.

I am able to get into the menu to configure the filters, what is the next step?

Don't rush into anything then. Start by reading the file network_readme.rtf in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Activision\Sfc3\Docs\Help

While there is information in that help document which is router specific, you may find that it (and the manual) tells you everything you need to know to open the ports on your router.

And you can still have some minor issues once they open the ports but they can be resolved too. Just let the dynaverse login go through all it's count-downs before you panic.

Ok I think I will call my ISP before I make any changes, especially since I don't know what type of router is being used.  So basically I need to open ports 6073, 2302, and 2303, or have them opened for me right?  This stuff is way out of my league.  Are there any specific questions or requests I should make of my ISP?

Well, the M series doesn't have the router and I'm not at all familar with how the filtering works. This may be able to be resolved simply by your ISP.

Sweet, I am able to log on  to the dynaverse.  Thank you guys so much for your help.

I only noticed three servers up, am I using the wrong verison (I have 1.01 Beta 2 Build (500)), or is that all there is?.  I also have Orion Pirates, are there any new patches for that as well?

Cool, glad to hear you got on the Dynaverse!

Not sure what's happening with SFC3 but there's at least 3 OP servers up at the moment - RDSL being the main one everyone's playing on at the moment and there's a cool General War Part 2 server coming up (Hydran front) and Chris Jones has a test server up for his improved TNG mod which ought to be pretty cool... lots of good stuff happening (my two servers and webmaps of course too!)

You'll need to open more ports for EAW/OP D2 play (2300-2400 and 47624 at a minimum).
Current OP patch:  SFC:Orion Pirates Patch 2.5.5.2 Available Now

I think there is a newer build of SFC3 than what you have on the go (531 is it?)...
edit: yup - SFC3 Patch 531
