Last night was the series finale of a little show that NBC has been running for a couple of years called Friends. You may have heard of it
My wife and I have had a great deal of affection for the show and followed it since the beginning. A big part of the connection is the fact that shortly after the show began, my wife joined an e-mail list of people who liked to watch the show. It morphed into an online community somewhat like this place, except without too much talk of politics and religion. People joined, left, got married (sometimes to each other), had babies, had big parties, getting together with people from all across the country and the world.
Anyway, last night we're sitting at home, having a leisurly dinner because TiVo is set to grab both the clip show and the finale. I step into the house for a moment and my cell phone is buzzing with a missed call and a voice mail message. I check my message and it was the HR Director from work calling in panic. Because she's got her TV on and it's showing a blue screen from Directv saying that they're having trouble with the programming from the source. She's freaked, and I'm instantly freaked. I grab a video tape and head down to work, to throw it in a VCR in hopes that it was a problem with the sat vs the actual channel. Unfortunately it was out down there too. I set it to record just in case, and headed back to the house.
It was really quite sad when 8pm started because we were online mushing with a bunch of our Friends friends when it started. They're all watching it together. Well, the people in Eastern and Central Time Zones. Being careful not to spoil it for the guy in Hawaii and the people in Pacific time. My wife and I are watching a continued blue screen of someone's death. It came on about 15 minutes into the show.
The top stories of the 10pm news on the NBC affiliate were:
1) Car Wreck outside the TV Station which took out the transformer and the desperate attempts to get power back on.
2) People waiting to see the Friends Finale and being frustrated.
3) The fact that the station will re-run the clip show and the first 15 minutes Sunday night at 10:35. They can only re-show the parts that they couldn't broadcast but please, tune in on the 20th to see the entire finale!
4) Oh ya, there was a murder today.
