I've found it works pretty good without having to do many corrections after the scan.

I use Paperport.

In fact, I chose my scanner on the fact that Paperport was bundled with it. I had heard that it did a pretty good job and when I used to do more OCR scanning, it wasn't too bad, but I still had to VERY CAREFULLY proofread the file. The problem is, even a 90-95% success rate is a pain, if you have to fish for every deviation.

I'd advise checking some of the Internet review sites (hey, I wonder if tomshardware or anandtech have reviews on OCR software!!) to get some kind of feedback. I haven't looked into products here in a while.

Textbridge pro. Better page formatting, less spurious hidden format symbols and less text recognition errors and artifacts.

Really? Storm, I'll check into it next time I get a scanner (which may be sooner than I'd like, as the one I've got, though it works fine, is really not supported for use in my new system, which runs XP).

Another one that I have heard works well is Omnipage Pro. It is extremely expensive though.

I used a scanner on the old hard copy study aids we had at the school house and created a 600 page hand out book book. I started out using PaperPort. It was maddening and slow because of all the errors and mandatory format mangling it did. One of the other department directors brought his personal copy of Textbridge 9 in for me. It made that terrible job a breeze.

It appears to come down to Textbridge Pro and Omnipage Pro. It most likely will depend on which I can find (semi)locally in a currrent version.

They seem to be the same company. Business vs Home programs?

OS Windows 2000 Pro or Win98SE, Printer/Scanner Lexmark X75. I am after a retail (for home use) OCR program, any advise on what to use or avoid based on your experiences would be useful.

I might have some software for you to use this, I just saw this thread. Isn't OCR thought for Scanner Purposes though? I need to look through my File of old software Scanners/ Printers.

OK I do have some software for that from a very old scanner I used to use. It will take me some time to find It, and to be honest, I could Propbably Mail It too you faster.

I'm planning to pick up something current. Hopefully the accuracy level will be better than the older versions. Also the stand alone ones should be more capable than the bundled versions (which may only work with the original bundled hardware). Thanks for the offer though. With luck I will pick something up Sunday.

There are several programs locally available the only one whose name I remember off hand is TextBridge. Anyone ever use it? Can any of them use dual CPUs or is more memory more important?
