Windows XPLost Its Mind
« on: April 28, 2004, 08:29:13 pm »
Every time I turned on my machine, I would get "Windows has recovered from a serious system error".  Turns out to be a flag for the memory dump from the pagefile (anyone remember frantically trying to clear a chkdsk bit before a massive volume rebooted and ran chkdsk for 4 hours?).  Anyhow, here is the fix if anyone else has seen this problem.

Of course I found it after I replaced my RAM and reloaded my OS.. No biggie though, my board does dual channel with the 400 DDR ram I put in it

Overview
Microsoft has released a patch that addresses the "System has recovered from a serious error" issue in Windows XP, and is discussed in Knowledge Base Article 317277. Download now to prevent this message from occurring each time the machine boots.

Symptoms
If Windows XP restarts because of a serious error, the Windows Error Reporting tool prompts you to report the problem to Microsoft for troubleshooting purposes. Windows may begin prompting you to report this information every time you restart the computer, even if no error occurred during the previous session. After this problem begins to occur, you are prompted to send the information after every restart, even if you choose not to send the information.

Cause
This problem occurs because after a Minidump (or memory dump) file is written, the paging file continues to have a flag set that indicates that a memory dump file needs to be written.

Resolution
To resolve this problem, download this file.

Another fix was to change the pagefile from custom to system managed.. I have no idea why it was set to custom.. but knowing how I umm.. experiement with OS settings.. I probably did it..

It's a miracle I'm not rebuilding once a week
