Hey y'all - Mission Help
« on: February 04, 2003, 08:17:06 pm »
Bought SFC3 not long ago - great game!

Anyways, I'm having trouble with the Romulan mission where you have to detonate the asteroid, plant sensor jammers and extract an operative from the base.

I plant the bomb, head towards the base, and that's about as far as I can get. After that, the bomb always needs to go off, or I get detected, or both. I'm using a Falcon with a Level 5 Cloaking device.

I've played it several times now, with no luck. Where are the jammers supposed to go? How do you deploy them? If I had more time then it wouldn't be a problem.

Haven't played the single player since a week after it was released, but from what I remember it seems like I planted the bomb then cloaked and warped to the far side of the Fed base (using the litle tactical map to set course) and waited for it to go off, then when the ships took off towards the explosion I extracted the operative or whatever and got the H out of D.

I tried that, but whenever I get close to one of the escort ships I am detected. I barely have enough time as it is to warp to the base before the bomb has to go off.

I'd have to go back & play the mission again to tell you how I did it for sure, like I said it has been a while and I only played that mission once, but I dont' remember any trouble with it.  I seem to remember cloaking and flying to a point somewhere far from the ships (which as I recall were orbiting around the base) and waiting for them to warp over towards the explosion when it went off.  Then as soon as they were about 1/2 way to the explosion site (which I think was up in the NW corner of the map) I warped right over to the base and did whatever it was I had to do.

Maybe someone else will read this who's done the mission recently & knows the details a little better than I can remember them...

Good luck

when decloaking to plant the bomb, be on the far side on the asteroid from the starbase, then cloak and warp to below the starbase, stay far away from teh base... go to speed 1/4 or lower and creep your way to the base

As I said before, I don't have a lot of time before the bomb goes off. I can warp most of the way to the starbase - just out of range of the defending ships - then go to impulse for maybe ten seconds before the antimatter charge begins to degrade and the bomb must be detonated, immediately after which I am detected or the mission fails outright.

Was there something I was supposed to do to the bomb first?

Go to asteroid, set bombs.

Mak your way to the starbase under 1/4 impulse. When it says blow the explosives, blow those damn explosives!

Continue to base on 1/4 impulse and you will not be detected. do not close within range 20.

You will get a jammer dialogue. Then you will make contact. Move into range 5 to pick him up automaticaly.

Fly to the shuttle and poof! Mission win!

Oh yeah.  I forgot to reiterate that range 20 thing.  Seems to be the magic number for "non-detection" in several of the single-player missions... like the one where you have to scan all the listening posts and the enemy ships are lurking all around.  If you get w/in 20 of any of the ships at any time you are dead.

Too bad it doesn't work that way in MP... cloaking seems to be just a neat way to put your fly down for a kick in the groin.
