Perhaps asking for some arguments here, regarding the last topic similar to this, but I don't care. I while back I was all jazzed up over the Apple iBooks. I was about to get one, when I was fired from my job. Since then, while my income has been next to nill, I've managed to keep most of what I've saved up and have just found out about a new line of iBooks coming out within the next few weeks (just announced a couple days ago).
http://www.apple.com/ibook/The timing couldn't be more perfect. i'll be going back to school in the middle of may, so I'll be able to use my student status to get a few hundred off of a new iBook and Mac Office X.
I'll be opting for the 1.2 GHz G4 model with a built in 512k L2 cache. The few qualms I had over the iBook included low memory cieling (1.25 gb vs the old 640 mb) low L2 Cache (512k vs old 256 k), slower HDs (4200 rpm)(hwaever, we'll see if i can't buy from someone that'll gimme something better). The other faults I've found that bothered me I hardly look at anymore since I can find work arounds for them with little effort.
This will not be the end of my PC days, however, since I'll still have my trusty compaq presario at 1.2 GHz running it's not nearly so trusty windows ME. In the coming months, since I plan to get into an accounting program for school, I may end up getting a new PC- possibly a laptop ther as well, we'll see, depending on how worth while accounting software is in the mac world- never tried either world, so we'll really have to see about that.
Now for those of you who would tout the seemingly pokie 1.2 GHz speed of this iBook I'm ogling so badly, keep in mind that clock speed is alot like RPMs in a car. One engine, like a CPU may go 55 mph at 2400 RPM, while another engine might boast 2000 RPM at 55 mph. Take note, that nowhere in ther do I claim my iBook will be a faster than some of your PCs, because I don't know that, and don't really expect it to be the case either. All I'm saying is that it might not be as far behind as it's clockspeed might indicate. Besides, If I really wanted raw speed I would go with another model, but what I really want is a good laptop for a good price- which this laptop seems to be.
I'm really looking forward to OS X panther with all it's goodies installed on it. I already have panther on an old iMac, but it doesn't have all the added SW that this iBook will come with.
Anyway, sorry for the rant, I'm just excited is all, and wanted to share.
One more thing, regarding the last mac related post in here, about a mac virus: I never got back to make a reply, and have even forgotten when and who made the post, so I'll put it in here:
Thanks for not lumping all of us into one category. I know there are alot of jerks out there still fighting the mac vs pc battle, and I guess I'm still a little overly sensitive on the issue. It became old to me along time ago when I realized that it all boiled down to preference in systems, and what you liked- not which is better and which is not..Each has their strong points. The only real reason I will always prefer macs, I think, is because I truly despise windows.
