I'm enjoying the game a lot but is there a way of making phaser weapons, cutting beams, etc., more powerful by editing any of the .gf files (or other files for that matter)? Also, does anyone know how you earn the various medals (the second and third rows in the display) and what they stand for? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

First apply the Activision Beta Patch found on the Activision web site...

Second, you can edit the *.gf files.. but it is recommended that the *.gf files bbe backed up for online play so that you can enter the Dynaverse 3 servers AND play on GSA without being called a cheater... modded *.gf files on GameSpy Arcade is considered a cheat unless other people are using the same changes as you...

Dynaverse 3 servers check your files for tampering, so modded files will prevent you from entering the servers...

Modded *.gf files is recommended for single player campaigns only... unless you are playing in a modded group with the exact same changes that you are using...
