Graphics corruption...HELP!!!
« on: April 25, 2004, 05:19:36 pm »
Ok, i recently installed SFC3 after not playing it for a while and to my surprise there was a new patch.  so i d/l it, and patch sfc up to the latest build.  I go into a skirmish and almost all the textures are corrupted and the ship models don't even appear.  I tried reinstalling the game and playing without either patch and it told me I had to install driectx 8.1 or higher.  This was a little surprising since I have dx 9.0b.  I tried reinstalling directx but it gave me the same message.  So ran the first beta patch.  The game started up fine but in-game it gave me the same texture curruption and missing ships.  So all in all I'm quite infuriated with this game at the moment.  When I first bought it ran fine (a little finicky perhapse, but fine). So if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200: p4 1.99ghz processor, a GeForce MX420 with NVIDIA's latest 56.72 drivers, dx 9.0b, 256 megs of ram.

I can also provide a screenshot of the corruption if anyone needs it.

reset your video card to default factory settings.. also.. make sure your drivers are the one's from NVidia and not Microsoft (Automatic Updates being turned on will sometimes update your drivers with Microsoft version) Microsoft version of the drivers are bugged...

if that doesn't work.. check previous versions of the video driver..

next.. if the above doesn't work.. lower your screen color resolution to 16 bit.

also posting a Direct X report would help alot...

When you install the game, it will tell you that you need DirectX 8 because the game was made before 9 came out.  IGNORE IT.  DO NOT INSTALL DIRECTX 8- it will screw up your DirectX, until you reinstall DirectX 9.

Reinstall DirectX 9, reinstall the game, reinstall the first beta patch, reinstall this new beta patch.

That should fix it.

Turns out all I had to do was go into the control panel and roll back my video card drivers.  Must be something weird with the latest NVIDIA drivers.

I thought it may have been driver related.. but it could have been vid card settings... lots of people try adjusting registry settings and vid card setttings to get better performance, which can cause game not to function correctly...

but in 99% of cases with SFC, it is usually a bad driver version.
