yeah i opened it the second time around.. must have just been a computer stress error.
anyways.. since they are only talking about 1 video game. it's very clear they dont like the game.
But it sounds like all other tries at a D&D based game. and just about any other game too.
I can agree with this topic.. but ive heard it all before from Gammers and Devs alike. just holding conversations on Various RPG Forums.
But it does seem with the new games that are comming out.. they are trying there best to incorporate Pen and Paper Games on Computers.
Desinging Dynamic rules instead of Databased rules.
With the first few tries, dont expect Big changes.. but subtle changes throughout the industry.
One change has been on Monsters and Targeting.. As explained in the article.. most games have monsters that ignore everything after it selects a target...
This was changed in Asherons Call, as i first noticed. when i Played Shadowbane. it changed little.. still having a target to go after.. til another caused more damage.
And Now i see Dragon Empires and Darkfall using a more Dynamic approach. even giving the Monsters a Migrating Spawn and allowing for the possibility of Extinction, through over hunting the single type of monster.
As for Bugs.. The guy who wrote this must have never played any other Computer game..
All games will have bugs apon release.
weather they are game killing bugs like Shadowbanes SB.exe error or little bugs that you can ignore.. the best thing about computer games.. they can be fixed.
As the Rule set applies... Pen and Paper games will always have to change to conform to Computer games... Not everything that Works on Pen and Paper will work on a Computer 3D game.
" i know, you've that before" so have 1 Hundred and 10 fold.
but it's true. you cant always incorporate every rule into the Computer model. simply becuase you sacrifice either Gameplay or Story line. which a RPG needs to make it a game.
it's going to be intresting to See how many rules Turbine ignores to make the upcomming D&D online. and how Many rules Atari ignores to get it out to the public.
Quote:
Tolkien emphasized story and content, through a standards of practice even in his day apparent in his work and depth of scale, that is entirely missing from the d20 system, and the system used by TOEE/Troika to deliver gaming content to the audience. As a writer, Tolkien did not emphasize standards over the whole premise of his Middle Earth, either; in that magic was at times cursed, and at times liberating, but not the end-all-be-all of its time; that could never be the case. Tolkien told a fantastic story, with rich level-less characters, who could die at any time, and perform some magic themselves, depending on their race and not their class; although there clearly were classes of fighters, wizards, clerics and monsters, that enabled certain feats; and that feats could be learned and studied to improve upon the lot of the character in question. Yet one thing missing from d20 is that while all characters are created equal to their rules, these rules tend to disrupt the flow of monsters, and all monsters are cookie-cut from a pattern, to likely save time; the characters are of character race (humanoid). Therefore, if anything is missing in d20, it's the standardized application of rules to all beings, of their age, experience, race and origin. This standardization must be applied in bulk, prior to any success in the CRPG realm.
from this paragraph.. it seems he has no clue to what other games are doing.. Yes they are already going back to basics.
but i can agree, Level based games should be a thing of the past. everyone should start equal.
It would be nice to see a RPG game use Player skill over Computer genrated skill.
As for his comment to Tolkien's characters being killable.. Well thats where games and stories differ, Permadeath does not belong in a game. IMHO.. it will create a game killing treadmill of building characters over and over and over again. Penalties for death like Full Loot rights and drop everything on death.. seems to be the trend and favored rule instead of permadeath.
But someone may come along and chage ours minds on Permadeath.
