FOAS Trek Universe Theory - Slipstream - Post TNG
« on: April 23, 2004, 11:08:45 pm »
Okay here you go. When Voyager got back to earth resaerch was done on all the data gathered by Janeway and her crew.
One interesting thing that was brought about was the Dauntless and its Slipstream drive.

So in my private universe a specialized fleet of ships was developed to utilize slipstream, albeit slightly slower.

I have a slight obsession with the dauntless, i love how she looks.

So i ask you people what do you think a Federation version of the Dauntless in BB, BC, CA, CL, DD, and FF forms would look like.
((Lets assuime that the Dauntless was a CL))

Again it is obvious that it cannot look exactly like the Dauntless, but i would prepher the same general shape (emphasis on the Small winglets on the saucer triangle points, and the nearly single hull)

 Dauntless Specs
Length : 180 m
Beam   : 40 m
Height  : 22.85 m
Decks  :7
Crew   : 150
Weapons : Said to be the same as an Intrepid Class

SIze wise she is 9 m longer than the Defiant and 15 m longer than a Nova Class . So to define her as a CL are you basing that on firepower ? Because her size is comperable to a DD or FF .

Defiant's only 120m not 170, look at the MSD man. But yeah even so 180m is too small for a CL even in Kirk's time let alone in TNG

Maaaaaaayyyybe.

As far as the type, im going on Firepower and Capabilities with size as a minor factor, so yes, it is a Light Cruiser
as far as the defiant, I classify it as a Destroyer, and the Nova as a Frigate.

Well Daystrom has her at 170m (shrug). Actually the Dauntless is even smaller than the NX-01,which is 230m.
And even Ex Astris Scientia has trouble definning the Defiants true size but that's another debate
As for the Dauntless,my votes for either FF or DD.

You quoted that off Daystrom Technical Idiots, er, Institute, didn't you?  So you know, Decks is highlighted in yellow, meaning that it is canon.  The rest is in white, meaning that it is his own speculation.  So canonically we don't know how long or high it is.

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/other/defiant-okudagram.jpg

shows 4-and-a-bit decks, DITL has 4 decks written in yelllow so that's definetly canon, the lower deck couldn't fit an upright adult human, it's probably a service deck of some sort for maintenance. the decks are 3m tall on most fed ships, even assuming a bit smaller maybe 2.5 to 2.7m in the Defiant that still gives us a height of about 1/2 of the DITL height

Edit: the thing about the Defiant is that she was repeatedly scaled up or down compared to other ships for dramaturgical reasons during the series run. The most constant size that she was throughout the series is around 120m.

Just another sign of how much B&B f'd up ST...but, they must have gold plated knee pads in their desk drawers, otherwise they'd have been fired long ago...

I know books are not canon, but this information comes from Starship Spotter, and I usually use this info as canon source when I need it.  Unfortunately the Dauntless isn?t in the book, but I thought this could help with the Defiant size and a little extra info to go with it.

Ok...first some notes:
I had to redesign the Dauntless...as she was not a federation ship...she was an alien interpretation of a federation starship
So I just designed a more federation ship from the Dauntless herself...once that was done...I was able to design other ships to fit the different hull types...more to come
Enjoy:

USS Dauntless:

Next the Fleet(first of it anyways...lol )
