Yakaspat's Fabrux Class Tender (WIP)
« on: April 07, 2004, 01:53:57 pm »
OK, got max working and started on yakaspat's Fabrux class tender...pretty fun to build actually. So far, she's at about 2300 polies, give or take a few. Don't have the nacelles on yet, as I was going to use the ones from my Ent.C, but...forgot to d/l the mod plugins. Should have them on later today, then texturing begins. Let me know what you think.

OK, got this from yakaspat, here's the link he provided, it's a ship he designed and is listed at Ex-Astris Scientia.

Hey, nice work!!!  ;-)

If you use the Ambassador nacelles, try to "flatten" them just slightly.  They should look like a cross between the Ambassador and the Galaxy.  Either way, whatever you come up with will be kickass.

Thanks!

Thanx!!

I'll have to see about flattening the nacelles some...I wound up using the nacelles from my Niagara class...seemed a better fit.

Here are a couple of shots showing the beginning of the texturing...looks pretty good so far, now theres some paint on her.

She's very sexy....for a Tender!!!!  ;-)

For you folks that care about these things (like me), I was disappointed that we had the Keppler, Fisher, Moncrief, etc, tenders and tugs for the TOS and TMP eras, but no tenders and tugs for the TNG era.  The Fabrux Class is my answer to that.  She was prolly built near the end of the Cardie Wars, the late 2350s, as most of the Kepplers, Fishers, Ptolemys, Moncriefs, etc, were way past their operational lifetimes and/or destroyed during the Cardie Wars.  The Fabrux went into production as a new and improved Tender.  Enjoy!

Great job so far on the mesh, too.

Thanx guys!!

Did a little more texture work last night (a very little), will do more tonight after work. Taking awhile, cause I'm trying to do this while watching the DS9 marathon on SpikeTV. Also, having to get my puter back up to speed after replacing the hdd is taking awhile...gave myself some eyestrain before I got the refresh rate back where it should be. Oh well, the sacrifices we make for the things we love!

Lucky sumb*tch!!!

OK, did a little more on her, still just the top, though I did get the rest of the bridge and the sides mapped, just need to draw the textures. She's looking pretty good, only problem so far is getting the name and registry to look good. What's the best way to do it.? Should I do them on a transparent bkgrd at, say size 72, then re-size down until it works?

Here's a couple of pics of my progress so far. Whatcha think?

I'm sure you've thought of this, but how about numbered docking berths for repair shuttles/workbees?

I'd like to have the first version be as true to the drawings on Bernd's site, if possible, so I can use the model to take screen grabs for our ASDB site gallery.  After that, you can modify the ship as much as you like.

As for suggestions for the registry, you're on your own pal, I have no idea.  I'm sure she'll look smashing, regardless.  Also, I think I ommitted the starfleet arrow pendant...maybe add that on to the side, top, and bottom, in typical TNG era livery (like the runabout, for example).

Please let me know if you need any more artistic suggestions or gripes!  heehee

I'm staying as true to the 3 view as I can. Here's a couple more shots of my progress. I went with the USS ELLIS name and registry from the list on the site, as it was easier to do. Let me know what you think.

GREAT JOB!!!!!

Everything looks awesome so far, dude.  Some suggestions:

-make the yellow escape pods more "brownish", like the Voyager perhaps.
-make the blue cap on top of the bridge a shade of gray, darker or lighter, doesn't matter...the current blue cap looks like there is a transparent dome there.
-perhaps move the phaser strips that are to either side of the registery farther away from the front, so they don't "run up against" the registery...perhaps just slightly farther aft.
-can we make the windows black and white (off and on), rather than all neon blue.  This is a minor quib, either way is cool.

Everything else is perfect.

Am I being too picky?

Thanks for the update!

When she is done, can you email her to me?

Sure, after all, it's your decision to release her...I'm just the technician, your the archetect.

The colors shouldn't be too hard to fix...moving the phaser strips might prove a little more difficult, but I'll see what I can do.

Thanx!

I'll be working on her tonight after work...I hate retail. Anyway, any suggestions on the RGB settings to get a more tan color? Everything I've tried is either too yellow or too gold. Thanx for any suggestions.

Lance, do you have a drawing of the underside? I have some ideas for it, but would be easier to keep it too your specs with a guide. If not, that's cool. Should there be a large hatch on the bottom where the manipulator arm is? One idea I had anyway.

Try this color setting: R165 G118 B5

As for the underside, try this:
-below the bridge dome on the underside, have a matching "round" disc shaped area, sorta like the area on the bottom of the Defiant.  This could be the bottom of the computer core, an secondary shuttle bay (like the Defiant), a sensor area (like the Enterprise-A), or an "iris" cargo bay hatch (like on the bottom of the Galaxy and Intrepid saucers).
-a large hatch, similar to the lateral cargo doors, makes sense.
-around the large fuel/repair/manipulator arm/waldo, perhaps have some senseless yet pratical "greebies", little divets, domes, pipies, just assorted "engineering" looking stuff that would be on a tender.  Not to much, though, starfleet ships are always pretty smooth.  This of the Runabout's hull cutouts for inspiration.
-perhaps some conveniently located hatches for EVA work and Bee deployment.
-perhaps some escape pods
-a few sensor implacements, like on the Nova Class?

None of the above matters to much, feel free to use whatever suggestions you like.  I trust your instincts, my good man.  Please be sure to credit all your hard work in the readme.  ;-)

Thanx!! As for being able to texture well, most of the credit goes to Atheorhaven and Pataflafla...they sent me the actual PSP files for ships they had textured so I could see how it was done. Basically, LAYERS ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND. Take the Ent.C I did...the saucer top had 20+ layers, one for every little detail. That way, I could mess up and not ruin the whole thing.

Beautiful!  I love it!

I would add just a few more little mindless hatches, ports, exhaust vents, "util greebies", perhaps a few phaser strips, and she's complete!

Thanks allot man!  Please email her to:

For the whole thing, or just the bottom? I was planning on adding a couple of those yellow and black outlined, square hatches. Also, what do you think about some exhaust vents on the corners? I can do it, then post oics and if you don't like the way it looks take 'em off. This is really fun...she's coming together nicely. It's one thing to a 3,4 or 5 view schematic, but to see it in 3d, and get the oportunity to move it around and see it in every angle, it's making it come alive. It really seems to fit the role you envisioned for it...A workhorse ship, ready and able to get the job done. You know, you and Azel should team up on something...I bet you both could come up with some awesome shi'ite.

Dude,

She certainly is coming together.  Perhaps she should only have four phaser strips, two forward, two aft, with the forward one's between the "nose" and the forward set of cargo/repair bay doors, and then two behind the aft cargo/repair bay doors, between them and the impulse exhaust.

I would say the sides can use "some" greebies, hatches, ports, and other meaningless details, but not too many.  The tops and sides should have more.  Here are a few ASDB  samples of a "detailed" util type ship:

http://www.trekships.org/deneva-redesign-schematics.gif

I think our ship is just about complete, I love the escape hatches, the graphics, the sensor dome, and how perfectly you recreated the model shape.  If you like the Fabrux, check out my other ship designs:

OUCH!! DM, those Borg implants hurt when tapping a poor human head...I think I have a concussion.

Working the final touches today...noticed I forgot to do the windows on the bridge module, corrected that, also replaced the nacelles to more accurately reflect the design. I'll be posting more pics this afternoon, hopefully she'll be just about done. Lance, do you want me to do the full SFC ready mod pkge, with hp/dp and a break mod, or just the model itself for your collection?

I was thinking last night, this would make a good assault ship conversion during the Dominion war...small, relatively fast and a lot of bays for rapid deployment. This design has a lot of possibilities besides a tender.

Sandman,

Cool, I'm more than satisfied with the design, please email me the file when complete.  All I really need is the .MOD and textures, the hardpoints maps and so forth are not necessary.

As for the assault variant, I suppose that could have been possible considering that Starfleet was getting their *sses kicked and were prolly adding weapon mounts to everything but the kitchen sinks!  Feel free to create whatever variants and/or mods you wish.

Great job, man.  -Lance

I agree too.   I've always loved Roleplaying  (when I used to Trek roleplay) as a freighter, tender, or tug....it's so easy to be a hero in a Galaxy Class ship, but, a little TMP Niffin or Ptolemny Class makes a much more interesting adventure.
