One of the nice things about the 1/1000 Trek kits from Polar Lights is they are snap togethers.  Your
son will be able to build a nice looking model with or without glue.  If decals would be a bit much
for him, they even come with stickers (yes they have decals as well) of all the markings and
windows.

So it's really up to the builder to decide how much they wish to put in to a particular kit.

  I will begin him with snap-togethers, get his feet wet, so to speak.

I can remember the first AMT Enterprise I built, must have been 1970 or 71, LONG time ago, but a great memory. It the orignal mold with the good decals, but the unsteday nacelles.

Long gone now.
