Model Request: My ASDB Models. Pretty Please.
« on: April 03, 2004, 08:03:53 pm »
Hi,

I'm new to the Taldren forum, and I would like to know if one of you excellent conversion/model-maker wizards can convert three of my Lightwave3D models to .MOD format (SFC2).  I'm a founding member of the ASDB Group (www.trekships.org, the companion site to Bernd Schneider's Ex Astris Scientia) and I've built three models for that site.  The models are the Bradbury Class, the Chimera Class, and the Bainbrige (Rigel) Class.  They are available for download in Lightwave format here:

http://www.axeman3d.com/models3.htm

They are the three that say designed by Lance M. Nutter  (me) and TheTrekker (my old website).  My small contribution to Trek fandom...

Anyway, I've been dying to get these converted by some small miracle into MOD format so that I may play them in SFC2.  More images are available at www.trekships.org of the models, and, if need be, I'd be than happy to send as many renders of the ship models to anybody who is willing to make/convert these into MOD format.  I'll be more than happy to have your site included in any links at trekships.org and/or Bernd's site, as a humble form of "payment".  Please, you'll be really cool!

If so, please let me know.  My email address is yakaspat@myesuite.com.  I hope this request is in line with the "way things are done" in this forum.

Thanks!!!!!!!!

-Lance M. Nutter, aka TheTrekker, aka Yakaspat.

Yeah, but I always thought his version was just a little too...crappy?

No offense Atheor.

Axeman, I'm sure that someone will convert these. I for one can't wait to see the TAS shuttles...

I have the Bradbury you are referring to, and, no offense, but, aside from the general hull structure, it looks nothing like my design.

I have built four Trek models to date for the ASDB group, the Bradbury, Rigel (aka Bainbrige), and Chimera, all of which are viwable both at Axeman's site and at the ASDB Journal of Applied Technology site (linked from www.trekships.org, and I also made a Trek tank/apc, also at the JOAT site.

Anyway, I mostly make non-Trek related sci-fi models.

But, if anyone can make a nice model of my trekships, I'll pledge them my right kidney.

Actually guys, the Bradbury I worked on was James Formo's (which was based of Lance's design) and it was pretty well what James wanted, so it was a good thing.

But assuming that they'll run through my tools here, I can probably convert these over to SFC2 without too much trouble.  The main concern I have (as always) is time.  This time, it's my inlaws coming to town.. :/

But I'll give 'er a shot..

I didn't mean in anyway to say that your work sucks...just that particular model wasn't very similar to my original.  But, I love your work!

Anyway, I will love you forever if you can pull this off...I'll even PayPal you 5 bucks each (heehee).

As for the inlaws, you should have married an orphan, like I did.

great looking ships you have there

conversion cant be done on them sorry too say way too high poly i`ve taken alook at them this morning
even after cutting polys and such they still way too high

as you can do hight poly models it should not take you long to do sfc versions

first up poly count is from 1000-10,000 max for sfc

most are around 3k-6k for most models

we also use textures on all parts of the mesh no max tricks sorry to say

maps can be 256x256 or 512x512 or 1024x1024 or 2048x2048

we use around 4-20 maps really up to you on this as most people do diffrent amouts
also we make the engines and such glow we use light maps this would be say your engine glow map in black and white with the engineI.bmp added in max for it glows in sfc i help you out with that if need

if you want too look over a sfc model too see how we do it just click on one of my sig it take u to one of my sites
lots of stuff there that will help u see how it is done

and if you need any help just post on the forums we happy too help anyway we can

and also the max plugins can be found at taldrens website if you only use lightwave one of us can do the conversion
to finish it off in max to mod format for you too

I have to agree with DM..

After conversion, the Bradbury came in at over 104,000 polies.  In order to run it ingame with any kind of spped, you'd have to reduce the textures to 32x32 and two base.

I could try to run an optimize on the ship, but that'll chunk it up a bit and may or may not reduce the poly count.  But if you want, I'll still finish converting it to MOD in hopes that you have some poly reducing miracle around..

Then you could import the hp/dping to use on the SlimFast version.

Didn't someone convert the high poly mesh of the Loknar and reduce it to normal SFC standards? You know the one with the deflectors underneath - the Phobos, so I'm sure it can be done somehow.

The Phobos was a newly built model based on the high poly one. You can't just simply convert a high res ship to SFC and chop off polygons, the ship would look blocky and relatively ruined. It's much easier and more productive to build a low detail 'copy', using the original as a reference.

But the Phobos was made for SFC... It was the best Loknar, once released by Makotokat... I hope he re-releases it.  I'd like to have it once again!

Drats, I was hoping it would be easier than that.  Those three trek ships were the first ones I built in Lightwave, about 2 or 3 years ago.  That's prolly why the poly count is so rediculous.  The Bradbury I actually didn't build, it was built by my good buddy Axeman, at my request.

Anyway, I use Lightwave 7.0 for all my modeling needs, though I haven't built anything since I took down my Cold-War.net site (an original Sci-Fi universe, currently down).  As for 3ds, I have version 6.0 that I downloaded from their home page, but, aside from creating simple renders, I have no idea how to use.  I only downloaded it to import and export SFC files, but, alas, the plugins only work for vs 3 and 4 of 3ds.  Ah well.

To be honest, I really am not playing SFC anymore.  Rather, I've found that MOD files are the easiest on my system and the best file formats with which to build a Trek Ship Library.   I've collected prolly over a hundred ship models, maybe 150 or so, and kitbashed a few to (an Athabaska Strike Cruiser, Warlord Heavy Destroyer, and Thunderbolt Destroyer, from Starfleet Dynamics).

I would really just like to have the lightwave models converted to MOD, so I can import the MOD file into Milkshape/Ultimate Unwrap3d, to add to my CDRW Library of Trek models.  My library really started out because I needed a quick way to import various trek ships from Armada 1 and 2, and SFC 1 and 2, and to screen grab images of them on a plain white background for use in a pdf "Guide to Star Trek Ships" I had planned.  If I can add my Bradbury, Chimera, and Bainbridge (Rigel) Classes, I'd be as happy as a clam.

If it's not possible, I understand.  If so, cool beans.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies.

Well, if you're not running it ingame and are only using it for transfer/storage purposes, then poly size shouldn't be an issue.  Yeah, I can try and do this for you.. I have it in .3ds now, so it's just a matter of going in and converting it out (well, that and a couple of other things, but basically pretty quick)..

You are a prince.  May whatever god you believe in, if any, bless you and whatever person or object you call your firstborne.

Also, check out my Fabrux Class Tender:

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/my_ships/fabrux.htm

In case you get bored...no mesh has been made for this one (I'm too lazy to make one, and, to be honest, it was far easier to draw than to actually build in 3D...all those curves...).

Thanks again!  Feel free to email the MODs whenever you are complete.  Whatever I can do for you, Please let me know.

I'd like to give the Fabrux a try when I get my hd done...hopefully tonight btw...though I'm nowhere near as good at texturing as Alec, I can do a mesh pretty good. Usually, I release v.1, then Alec gets it and makes it look purty for v.2. This looks like a good one do to test my system with, while also having the added benifit of incorporating shapes and parts I'll be able to re-use in the Lost Era ships.

Cool beans.  Feel free to use the images on the page for the textures, you have my complete blessing to use the design and textures for whatever purpose you can think of.  Please email the finished MOD if you deside to go through with the project.  By the way, the ship was named after Fabrux, of Flare fame, and is pronounced "fa-BROOKS", in case you were wondering.  ;-)

Cool. We usually make the textures in PSP or Photoshop (I use both), I'll be usuing the pics as a reference. This should be fun.
