256Mb 9800 Pro is $295
256Mb 9800 XT is $407
256Mb 9600 Pro is $139
256Mb 9600 XT is $172

Anything more than 128Mb is overkill right now...

128Mb 9600 Pro - $129
128Mb 9600 XT - $153
128Mb 9800 Pro - $210 (X Pix)
128Mb 9800 XT - N/A

Maybe it wont be long before having 128Mb or more video ram is necessary, but the day isnt here yet...

Thought you might be.  Using the shadows feature with an ATi card causes big problems in that game.

Only game I've had problems with is SWG and that is crap for most vid cards.

Yeah, well Relic knew it didn't work when they shipped it, so if you're running Homeworld with an ATi card it defaults to off, so you probably wouldn't have noticed.

So what's 'good' for NVidia? I"m so confused.

"Good" or "Top of the line" for Nvidia has the Ultra tag.  Such as my 5200 Ultra or better, the 5700 Ultra or their biggest and baddest, the GeForceFX 5950 Ultra.

Never EVER buy an Nvidia based card with an extendsion of XT.  That is WAY underclocked and weak and probably not cooled well enough to clock it up at home.  With ATI, what you want it avoid is SE and VE.
