Did you move the monitor or put any other appliances near it?

Flickering is usually caused by one of the following:

1) Bad power supply
2) Bad power on the line (is it an old power strip?)
3) Electromagnetic interference (TV, fan, or other appliance nearby).

If you just changed your O/S or video card recently check for a low refresh rate setting, and bump it up to the highest rate the monitor can handle....

What about a monitor that is displaying everything increasingly...    RED?

I've had to turn down the R Gain and turn up the G and B Gains all the way just to make it barely usable.   My video card is a GeForce2 Ultra, btw.

perhaps a electron gun misalignment. Does you monitor have built in degaussing? if not find out how much it would cause to get it degaused.

No built in deqaussing.  I've been hitting degauss at least once a day, but it hasn't seemed to help at all.

BTW, You've been doing all that MontyPython LOTR stuff, while you where seeing Red? I'd love to see your work when Your in a good mood.

I know, what hurts is that I got this monitor brand new only two years ago.  In the immortal words of Ferret (when he and the family stopped by for a visit a couple months ago), "dude... that sucks."

Reading email and typing up my parody work in txt files isn't to bad, but I've had to resort to doing all my graphics work during my lunch break at work.

Game playing, however, has become pretty much hopeless.  Currently, everything that is white appears pink, everything red appears dark reddish orange, and everything purple appears brown.

WHOOOHOOOO!!!  I just got a PM from a nearby Taldrenite offering me an extra 17" monitor!  Does this community ROCK, or what?!?

Barabbas, I owe you BIG TIME!

Sounds like the problem with the monitor that came with my first system.  It's an HP M50, also 5 years old, and a couple years ago it started flickering out and the whole screen would go purple (Hsta, you old Hydran, you'd love that!), like the green gun was going p00py.  But get this:  Since I brought it home (as it was being used by my sister), it hasn't acted up even once!  It is still going bad though.  When there's a lot of light colors on the screen, like large open windows or bright web pages, only a 3inx3in patch in the middle is readable at 1024x768, the rest around the outside is blurry.  The screen blurs at any resolution, but 800x600 is readable all around.

This link can explain It better then I can.

degauss

To degauss (pronounced dee-GOWS) is to demagnetize. Degaussing a computer display removes any undesirable magnetic field that may have built up within the display, causing distortion of the image or color. Display monitors with cathode ray tube (CRT) technology are subject to the buildup of magnetic fields. Many display manufacturers include an internal coil that will degauss the display when it is turned on. Some displays also include an external control that a user can operate to degauss the display at any time.
Degaussing a magnetic storage medium removes all the data stored on it. A degausser is a device used for this purpose.

I am still using the D1226 19" Dell monitor I got when I got my Dell P-II 300 Mhz PC all those years ago.  I do have to admit that I have been looking at a new LCD monitor though. This 19" is just huge and takes up quite a lot of desk space.

As for what to look for Kahlee, I would go to a reviw site like  this and the local Best Buy or similiar store to look around and get an idea of what is out there.
