My monitor had a short in the VGA plug. I paid 50 dollars for it used. It was shorting out and doing terrible things to my graphic card, powersupply and hard drive. I decided to buy a VGA extension cord and cut off the old one and spice the new cord onto the old one. I did not have a pin diagram and decided to do continuity checks on all pins on both cords. When I got through I discovered that the two cables did not pin out the same.

I now had a worthless monitor so I went out and bought a big LCD flat Panel for 400 dollars. all's well that ends well.

Did you move the monitor or put any other appliances near it?

Flickering is usually caused by one of the following:

1) Bad power supply
2) Bad power on the line (is it an old power strip?)
3) Electromagnetic interference (TV, fan, or other appliance nearby).

If you just changed your O/S or video card recently check for a low refresh rate setting, and bump it up to the highest rate the monitor can handle....

What about a monitor that is displaying everything increasingly... RED?

I've had to turn down the R Gain and turn up the G and B Gains all the way just to make it barely usable. My video card is a GeForce2 Ultra, btw.

perhaps a electron gun misalignment. Does you monitor have built in degaussing? if not find out how much it would cause to get it degaused.

Even with Deguasing, It might be cheaper in the long run to go ahead and by A new Monitor.

BTW, You've been doing all that MontyPython LOTR stuff, while you where seeing Red? I'd love to see your work when Your in a good mood.

Sounds like the problem with the monitor that came with my first system. It's an HP M50, also 5 years old, and a couple years ago it started flickering out and the whole screen would go purple (Hsta, you old Hydran, you'd love that!), like the green gun was going p00py. But get this: Since I brought it home (as it was being used by my sister), it hasn't acted up even once!

It is still going bad though. When there's a lot of light colors on the screen, like large open windows or bright web pages, only a 3inx3in patch in the middle is readable at 1024x768, the rest around the outside is blurry. The screen blurs at any resolution, but 800x600 is readable all around.

I am still using the D1226 19" Dell monitor I got when I got my Dell P-II 300 Mhz PC all those years ago. I do have to admit that I have been looking at a new LCD monitor though. This 19" is just huge and takes up quite a lot of desk space.

As for what to look for Kahlee, I would go to a reviw site like this and the local Best Buy or similiar store to look around and get an idea of what is out there.

The one I am useing came with the very first computer I had A packard bell 66, So its about 5 years old.

Is the only thing that has never given me problems, but it's starting to flicker a bit more than normal, so whatcha think time to start looking for another one. Only thing is I Have limited space which is why I kept it for so long, that and I dont know anything about the newest monitors that are out there.

I know what you mean, I do have a 15" monitor that I'm not using right now If you want It. However, wal-Mart (yes i know) has a pretty nice 17' flat screen for under $100.00. It seems to be ok For what I do here at home, Talk to you guys, Play a few games, etc.

but yeah, It sounds like you may want to invest in a new monitor. Heck I'm still running an old Compaq V70 17" myself, But I'm thinking about getting a new monitor anyway.

I can recall some advice that I believe Dave, or The Beast gave me awhile back. Don't worry about a brand name, Your not going to see much differance either in Dot pitch, or Refresh Rates from most Monitors. So I guess, unless your epileptic, I wouldn't worry too much about the monitor, Just get an affordable one.

Of course If you can get a 19" go for It.
