I had my first episode in 88 on a field problem. It went undiagnosed until 96. At first zantac controlled it well. then a pill a day went to two or three with the symptoms starting afresh in the morning. I suspect mine is the vargus nerve augmented type because stress sets it off right away so does altering my breathing pattern and tensing my abs as happens under stress.  (tightening the diaphram.)  I have often awaken to find my stomach acid being reguritated and actually soaking part of my pillow, So I think the valve that they are checking day after tomorrow is damaged, too.  Hopefully these guys will get to the root of the problem so I can get the proper remedy for it. You know what the pain is like. being gut shot seems similar.

I have Hemochromatosis which means every 6 months I have to have a Upper and Lower GI scan The Upper GI Scan is not to bad. I don't know what they use there in your neck of the woods. Out here in San Jose they don't use Barium for a upper scan. I have to drink almost 2 pints of this punch flavord stuff. Actualy it's not that bad

Sirgod there is no need. This has been a long time coming. I know what I described sounds bad but it has been a long time coming and hopefully it is about to be over. If you were to come down we would still have to get you back as my car is likely in better shape mechanically than yours. I will stay at the hospital if need be until I can drive safely. The pain I've described is only a problem if it comes on fully before I can take my medication and sleep. Normally I catch it now well before it becomes self sustaining like that. When if first started striking it was a bear because the damned medics started with a lot of ineffective meds before figuring out it needed the newer treatments. This was in the days they thought all ulcers were from stress or psychosomatic and few seemed to know anything about GERD. once they gave me the proper med (this happened in another field problem and the documentation was poor) I could not identify the med except by shape and color. It was almost a year after that that I got the proper perscription. Now the med is OTC. but   it is losing it's effectiveness.

This is the first I've heard of an alternate. I'd like to know more about it. I'll ask.

A lower GI is not necessary (barium enema) thankfully.

Storm,

It does sound like your symptoms are worse then mine.  The stomach issues are similar, but I've never had acid coughed-up on a pillow yet.

One thing to keep in mind is that GERD is genetic.  I have it, so did my Dad, Mom, both siblings, and even my 7 yo nephew (that one blew me away).  However, that does make sense since it's root cause is a problem with an esophogus muscle.  So make sure your kids are aware of it so they can be on the look out later in life.

Hope it works out fine.  Worse case scenario, there is an operation to correct the damage and strengthen the muscle.

Yeah my mom had it too but hers has subsided over time.

What happens is Ill turn over in bed and the stuff works itself up my throat and then triggers a gag reflex that trigger usually wakes me up and I can stop it in a split second but some times a little makes it all the way up. apparently though sometimes i sleep through it or fall asleep unaware of what happened. zantac is losing it's ability to cut back production. Pepcid is useless. Aciphex is slow working. tums, rolaid, pmom, pepto, alkaseltzer;  none of that has ever worked even from the begining. I have not tried prilosec yet.

GERD problems? Well, I'm glad you didn't have to be scoped. ( BTW, Is It politicly correct too say your glad someone didn't have ther Posterior examined? )

I am glad you made It home ok though. Did they find the cause for your GERD problems?

Wishing you well Bro.

Oh no no no  Stormy  . . . .  Now the fun begins.

For you see . . .  J'inn the Massive has tummy problems.   They say it's stress.   They say it's the volume of Hot Suace I eat.  But whatever.

Anywho.   I had one of these lovely tests a while ago.     AFTER I took it the doctor told me the bad news.  For you see, that chalk milk shake you drank . .  . well . . . it turns to a nice form of cemet in your intestines.

You've heard the saying  "Sh<bleep>ing bricks" right?    Well now you get to live it.     Trust me here.   Drink tons of water or you will be very very sorry.

I still  have to sit down slowly.    OOooch  Ouuuch.

The VA contracts such tests out. The techs just take the pictures. Thier doc does some sort of cursory look. Then the stuff goes to the VA doc does the analysis later.

Yeah, I've heard that and I've drank two litres of water but my lower gut still feels like I've swallowed a Cinder Brick. I've also had a headache and (funny enough) a reflux episode from all the gagging with the darned barium.
