Yeah you are right, Subspace, there MUST be a way to do it otherwise server admins wouldn't be able to play on their own server, I never thought of that.  Maybe one of the Gods on High from KOTH or GFL or SFCx or whatever will read this and let us in on their Wisdom.

I just want my girlfriend to be able to play against me so I can beat the snot out of her.  She beats me in Civ3 all the time.  I want Revenge in my own, particular, errr.... idiom.

The annoying part is that you can't play with someone else on your LAN unless you buy TWO copies of SFC3.  Otherwise it detects the same CD key.  I think.  I haven't tried it with LAN games but i know it does that on dyna.

That is only on dyna. i have two machines at my home, so when we play a lan one person starts sfc3 first, when its up and running we pass the disk over to the other comp.   There is no cd key thing involved after you have started the game(thank god or i would have been pissed)

Actually there is a workaround.

here are the steps:

1) Install SFC3 on both computers in the LAN (duh).

2)  Start up SFC3 on both computers.  Make sure the CD is in one of the two computers.

3) The comp with the CD will start up fine, the other will hang up on the "Please insert CD screen".  When the computer with the CD has SFC3 FULLY loaded, take the CD out, and put it in the computer at the Please Insert CD screen, then press okay.  That'll start up too.

4) Now play!  It seems you don't need the CD to play, it just wants the CD to make sure you didn't download the game illegally or something.
