LAN play
« on: February 26, 2003, 07:27:21 am »
With this new patch will I be able to host my own LAN play with my home network without going to gamespy or the internet? And if not is there a way that this could be done? Any help will be greatly noted.

LAN play is very easy.  If you're talking about sfc2 you go to multiplayer and then there is a LAN connection button at the bottom of the screen.  In sfc3 you go to Single/Multiplayer Skirmish and click the host button.  Anyone who wants to join just clicks on the Local Area Network option and hits connect.  I've played several LAN games for sfc2 and 3 in my dorm and it has always worked great.

The annoying part is that you can't play with someone else on your LAN unless you buy TWO copies of SFC3.  Otherwise it detects the same CD key.  I think.  I haven't tried it with LAN games but i know it does that on dyna.

You mean for two people to play on two different computers you are required to own *gasp* two copies.  That makes no sense whatsoever!!!

The age of the "spawned" multiplayer only day is over friends.  Now before you all go running off at the mouth, yes I know there are "no-cd" cracks and that it is possible to play with only one CD.  But lets leave that off this board (other than my reference).

Unfortunately the way the dynaverse is set up you always have to log in through the internet - even if you have a server set up within your own network.  It would've been cool though to have a LAN version of the dynaverse...

Unless I am totally misinformed, no.

Far as I can tell the only way to play LAN games is one-at-a-time single player skirmishes.  Works great from my experience, but whoever's the host has to set up each game individually.  Beats the crap out of Gamespy single player as long as you have people already together to set up a game.

D3 is still better on the whole though if you want more than one-at-a-time encounters, IMO.

Does anyone know the answer to this: If I have 2 legit copies of SFC3, and 2 computers networked together via the same router, can they both get on the D3 simultaneously?  I seem to remember reading somewhere that it wouldn't work.  Has anyone tried it?

Yeah you are right, Subspace, there MUST be a way to do it otherwise server admins wouldn't be able to play on their own server, I never thought of that.  Maybe one of the Gods on High from KOTH or GFL or SFCx or whatever will read this and let us in on their Wisdom.

I just want my girlfriend to be able to play against me so I can beat the snot out of her.  She beats me in Civ3 all the time.  I want Revenge in my own, particular, errr.... idiom.

That is only on dyna. i have two machines at my home, so when we play a lan one person starts sfc3 first, when its up and running we pass the disk over to the other comp.   There is no cd key thing involved after you have started the game(thank god or i would have been pissed)

Actually there is a workaround.

here are the steps:

1) Install SFC3 on both computers in the LAN (duh).

2)  Start up SFC3 on both computers.  Make sure the CD is in one of the two computers.

3) The comp with the CD will start up fine, the other will hang up on the "Please insert CD screen".  When the computer with the CD has SFC3 FULLY loaded, take the CD out, and put it in the computer at the Please Insert CD screen, then press okay.  That'll start up too.

4) Now play!  It seems you don't need the CD to play, it just wants the CD to make sure you didn't download the game illegally or something.
