Good lord!  If they ever wanted to bring Trek back to life and pack the seats in theatres, this would be it.   What a way to segue into Sulu Trek.  Really though, they would be doing themselves a huge favor if they could put a project like this together.

With CGI, they can take Kirk's face (they have oodles of footage), and place it on another actor post production. I'm sure they could do the voice too. In fact, not just Kirk, but all of them. It would be rather expensive and time consuming though, but ok for a small screen television show.
Deep Space Nine used old footage from the Trouble with Tribbles, so a precedent has already been set. It would be criticised as a blatant attempt to win back popularity for the show, especially by harsh critics, so if it wasnt done really well to be 'worthy' of the historical cultural icon that its become, it would probably backfire and even the fans would be discgusted. (Look at the reaction to Enterprise).
The Original series is still my favourite, despite its archaic special effects and 60s styling.

Emerald Edge and I are talking about the real McCoys here Tracey .That is why Williiam(Captian Kirk)Shatner needs to go on a diet and start working out aswell as the rest of the cast. The original to put together another Movie I would really like to see it to.That is if those big decision makers at Paramount would be listening to what the fans really and no more Captian Picard and company on the big screen. That goes for the spin offs to thank goodness those didn't make on the big screen it would be like watching 200 inch tv set with out a remote and commercial free.

The computer generated Kirk/Shatner isn't that bad an idea, you could always get Shatner to read dialogue, and just loop it over the bogus computer Kirk.

TOS is still the best, I have to agree, even though I have enjoyed TNG and DS9, you just can never top Kirk/Spock/McCoy trio.

Somewhere, they are still a landing party entering the unkown, with guts, smarts and some bare-knuckles if needed!

Is there even any talk of another trek movie now? After the last one, Stewart said he'd be willing, but it looked like that was it. I'd prefer to see the geezers in space as compared to the B&B boredom that I have endured for a decade, hoping that somehow, the Trek we all loved would somehow emerge.

Instead, I was fed a steady diet of stupidity, such as Neelix (Jar-Jar ain't got nothin on him!) and the ever annoying holo-doc, which nobody in the 24th century is smart enough to understand is a manisfastation of the ship's computer, just shut the damn thing off, IT AIN'T ALIVE!

Now, we are looking at probaly the end, no committment to Enterprise, which probaly means the axe will fall, and Trek will again be dead.

Hey while there at it. They could remaster the original Series. Keep the original footage with character dialouge., but update the space effect scenes. I am sure ther is technoligy to allow an update of the bridge as well. Though I wouldn't want it over done. Why not do that. They probably could make enough money just from people buying the DVDs. Even the young generatin might enjoy it with spiffed up effects. TOS will always be the best. I consider "Enterprise" to be nothing more than Tabloid quality.

You know, these days, an animated series might actually be the way to go. The 1970s version was poorly done, but the animation today is superb, something like this could actually be a big hit.  You could even get Shatner, or Shatner sound alike for Kirk, and cast as much of the orginal crew as can be had.

Think of it, they do hundreds of episodes of shows these days, they could do a lot of Trek this way.

You've been watching too much Babylon 5, ActiveX!

That movie was called Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

A Trek animated series of that quality could possibly be the best Trek show, period.

Or eating too many yummy donuts and not fiiting into their uniforms.

Think about it:

No Wardrobe department

No long hours in the make-up chair

No specialized set building (I lived in L.A., and always loved that most alien planets looked like Simi Valley)

A lot of the constraints faced by Science Fiction shows are due to the limits of what can be filmed. Those limits are almost completely removed in CGI animation. If Viacom can foot the bill for a truly uninspired Spider-Man CGI series on MTV, surely they could do the same for Star Trek, one of their core properties.

It would seem to have enormous upside, and little downside, yet I have never heard of anyone pitching it.

These days, computer effects have cut costs enormously, doing the entire deal as computer generated, or animation-computer imaging could be done relatively cheaply.

I also bet it would b-slap Enterprise in the ratings.

One of the important things about the animated series was it allowed them to use scripts that they could never have produced sets for. There was some serious Sci-Fi writing in some of those episodes (as well as some silliness).
