Never mind the symbolism...as in I hate Ivy League...

But I hate Ivy. The stuff is allover my concrete walls, my wooden fences and choking my trees...just love to pull it and clearing it out. My neighbor started it and trying to figure out a way to kill it off for good. Grind the vine.

Any suggestions? We are talking suburban guerilla warfare here...need to find the mainline o this stuff

you need to poison the root, your local hardware store should have something.You need to cut the whole bush down to a stump then drill a core and insert the poison (herbicide).

Ivy is bad for buildings even brick ones and can cause damp problems and wet rot.

Round Up is your answer. Apply it this spring to the leafy surfaces and in 2 - 4 weeks all will be dead. After it is dead you can do whatever you want. Don't do anything however before a complete kill is achieved.

Just to add to wwhat Post said. Ivy is a broadleaf plant and so anything that kills weeds will kill Ivy.

Make sure you kill any succers that spring up if you use roundup as it does not kill the root system if it is an established plant

I gather it is english ivy you are talking about (Hedera helix)

Round up is good for spot weeding but i don't (In my experience believe ) it does not have a big enough punch to really be effective for something as tenacious as Ivy ( English or Poison). When i was living in Virginia i had to clean a fence row that had English Ivy mixed with poison Ivy i used Spectricide weed killer this kills EVERY plant it comes in contact with for up to a year.
I used it at double the dose prescribed in the instructions and it really did the job!!! Just be very careful applying it as it is very dangerous if pets or small children come in contact with it for about 3 hours and MAKE sure you protect your self as well !! I'm not exaggerating, This stuff kills every thing, And it should take care of the roots as well. wait about 3 days to remove any dead brush and re apply as needed.

yup like I said try the 'english' method to kill 'english ivy' it is alot less harmful to your other plants too.

I don't think that you will find a magic bullet that will rid you of it in one shot. The Cheese's method sounds like it has the longest lasting effect although using Roundup weed killer and then cutting back should eventually take care of the problem with regular treatments of the new growth.

I forgot about the watered down version of RoundUp that is out there. The version we get for the farm is a concetrate that makes 100 gallons of what you buy in the store. IF you take a paint brush and brush it on enough of the leaves, it will kill deader than dead. You MUST wait for a complete kill before removing the plant or it will come back. We usually get 3-5 year control for anything we are trying to control.

I just remembered we also used to use a product called Cross Bow that is just as effective also. Like i said be VERY careful applying it, And keep kids and pet out of it for about a day just to be safe.
