Got the restraining bolt areas done, and yes that is the way they look. And you are also looking at just how close I want to be able to get to the ship as well. poly count on the engine so far is 15,400. Just about finished with it.

Most Excellent.... Now I'm kind a wondering what this whole thing will look like when it's done.  I know th poly count will be high ...  but, just the same this is a great experiment  in seeing what kind of detail can be acomplished when someone puts their mind to it.

Thanks for sharing !

No pictures but progress report I guess. I tried for most of the night to model the holes in the grill thats on the inside of the trench of the warp drive. Did not do to well, and poly count went thru the roof as well, over 100k. so that is one area I may wind up textureing. Got the impluse drive done and the connecting dorsal done tho.

May try again on the warp grills, if I can figure out a way to do it without going to high on the polies.

One other thing, I am not sure if you are aware of this, but the warp engines have a slight taper front to back.  They are not cylindrical.

Otherwise your detail work is looking very nice.  Keep up the good work.

Well progress update tried to model the holes in the grill that runs in the trench, 256 holes all together, Max did not like that , wouldnt even save the file either.  But ill keep trying.

gonna be fun when I get to the saucer grid lines but I may just leave it smooth, like it was in the show. Poly count alone wouldl probably reach quarter mill, with just puting in the windows and modeling the lettering and stuff, and I dont think the game could handle a quarter mill poly ship.

Well max just does not like me trying to cut 256 holes into a plane . May have to do it the other way I was trying, but that will be a lot of polies to clean up afterwords GRRR.

Well Success!!!! I got the warp grills modeled 89,000 polys for one Engine that is before cleaning it up tho. But now I cant post pictures . Damn web servics. Its allways something. Modeling the markings will add probably a couple more thous to it.

Great job Khalee!

One thing to note though: The part known as the "reactor loop" is not cyclindrical as you depict it here....I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be a flar rectangular shape.

Really? Hmm, gonna have to look at it again, The sinclar drawings im useing show it as a pipe with the ends bent down. Which is why I did it by lofting a circle on a line and ffd'ing it into shape.

Well added the front grill to see what it looks like, but weee doggys it went to 140k polies.Even with cleaning it up I wont save that many polies, so I just might leave that detail off.

Been a while since i posted here, The model is looking sweet so far  i can hook you up with another photo reference site if u want it. Pics of the 11 footer as it is seen now at the smithsonian http://www.mjtsc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/  They obviously went a "little" ballistic with the weathering during the restoration, but it gives it a nice touch. tho i like the classic look also

Wow thanks for the pics!

The parts shown in the last pic are the "intercoolers", not the "reactor loop" I'm talking about......which by the way upon closer inspection seems to be neither a perfect cylinder shape nor a rectangle, but something in between. They're like "square tubes" that are very rounded at the edges.

Ok question on cutting in circles, I have been trying to cut in the windows and port holes in the connecting dorsal, the retangles go farily well. But when it comes to the protholes, well that is where im running into problems. I have been Booleaning them in, but they just dont look very good. A lot of long skiny triangles that I cant seem to smooth out. any tips on how to get them cut in without inceraseing poly count or rebuilding the part will be helpfull.

Ok update grill work is done. And note the pimples on the final stage intercooler each one of those are modeled on as well.
Note on the grill before clean up it was 140000 polies, after I cleaned it up both together are 51000 polies I manage to shave off quite a lot of polies, and not lose to much detail in the prosses either.

Update a test shot modeling the grid lines and lettering 125,000 polies so far. the yellow and purple things you see are place holders for the windows on the secondary hull. Yes Im building it in a haphazzard way, simply because when I get stuck on one area adn it start giving me fits I go and do something eles.

Minor update lower sensor dome nearing compleation. Areas still giving me trouble are the conecting dorsal, mainly cutting in the portholes, so far have not been able to get a clean cut. And the three cutouts in the front of the secondary hull. the few times I tried them did not go well. I can do them but, just trying to get the back part the correct shape and flush with the hull is the trouble spot. But here are the picts.

Another small update starting to model the grill work in the warp pylons, still got a little bit more to do on the engine but all together 95700 polies for the engine and pylon 138000 alltogether. Still have not started on the front part of the secondary hull as that is just going to be a pain to get right. And Im still haveing problems getting clean cuts with the windows too.

Well Desater had to stike.  I got A corrupted file Max refuses to open it. Every time I click on the file max locks up
Dont know why, As none of the other files Lock up just that one. Got to start all over    . But it woun't take too much to get back to where I was. I just wont model the grill works this time.

Wow, sorry to hear that. She was comming along nicely too.

Look at all the files in your autoback folder, there may be a version saved just before the disaster struck (this happened to me many times before) Hopefully there is a file saved of the version completed just before the error happened. FYI i always export a backup .3ds whenever i can along with a max save. Just in case of situations like this

Nice modeling  - Tasty warps!

As good if not better than the models Ive seen in the hi rez SciFi forums.

IMO the shuttle bay/cove area is the toughest part on the Enterprise to model...

Oh wow sorry to see this happen...

If in 3d Max check your autobak.mx files in 3dmax/autoback folder. Note that these will not show up in the File>Open File window because of the "MX" extension, but if you change to view all files then select "autobak#.mx" then click open, max SHOULD open it. When Max crashes, sometimes it make a recover file in the autoback directory.

It looks like yur using MAX from the renderings....

Also you mighttry working on seperate sections of the ship  in different files, for less crasheyness
