Windows-XP has a "feature" (???) with which it is possible to manually crash a system by simply holding the right CTRL key and pressing the "Scroll Lock" key twice. This feature can be turned on by the following steps:

1. Start regedit. (If you are unfamiliar with regedit, please refer to this FAQ)
2. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters
3. Create a new DWORD value and name it CrashOnCtrlScroll
4. Right-click on this newly created value and click on Modify
5. Enter 1 in the Value data field and click on OK.
6. Close regedit and reboot your system.
7. Now you can blue screen (crash) your system by holding the right CTRL key and pressing "Scroll Lock" twice.

Note:

Your system may reboot or show a blue screen whenever this crash is initiated. If your system reboots after initiating the crash, and you want to see the blue screen, follow these steps:

1. Go to Control Panel > System
2. Click on the Advanced tab
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click the Settings button.
4. Under System failure, uncheck the option Automatically restart.

Happy crashing...

For those of you who have moved from windows 98 to XP and missed that random destructive crash- fear not! Those helpful Microsoft programmers let you reminisce with in built functionality. Crashing has never been easier or more convenient!

OK...

Now that I've got that out of my system, so to speak, I have to wonder if that is a piss take. I'm not stupid enough to try that on my very stable XP system.

Me neither Monty, but I will say this, that holding down the shift key thingy drives me NUTS!

I have to agree, WinXP rocks the house, and when I get back to Texas, that Sony P4 is going to say bye-bye to ME and hello to XP real quick!

But... why would someone ever, during noremal use of the machine, hold down the CTRL key and hit SCROLL LOCK twice?

I want something that crashes the machine whenever they type the letter 'S'.

I never hold down the CTRL key and hit the  SCROLL LOCK key twice however, I do hit the SCROLL LOCK key twice quite often since I use a KVM switch. If you want something that will crash the machine whenever a letter is typed just find a really messed up W9X/ME system, you may not even need to touch the keyboard.

Edit: This is probably something leftover from the OS stress testing to see how well the OS handles recovery from a crash.

Very likely, considering that Microsoft had an unusual show of sense and turned the "feature" off before shipping.
