Fleet Formations: A Comment

I d/led the new beta patch last night, and the first thing that I noticed that was different was that AI ships couldnt join up with my fleet.  I like that Idea, but I think that there needs to be a modification.

Currently you cannot have a ship that is of a larger class than yours join up with you, while a good idea, I think it should be changed so that it is based on Rank.  I have never been fond of the bigger ships, too slow and they turn like a brick.  When I play as Fed the highest I normally go is the Intrepid, perhaps to the Akira, but never higher than that.  Klinks are normally more manueverable so I get to the Vor'cha before I stop increasing.  I havent played as Romulan since the patch came out, and I know that there have been a lot of fixes with the Rommies, but I normally stop with the Shrike or the Hawk.  I cannot stand playing as the Borg and never will play conquest with them. (I do like to know what end of my ship is SUPPOSED to be facing foreward, without having to constantly look up to the tactical map (This of course stems from being forced to play the game on my laptop before my PC arrived which didnt meet the requirements for memory (well it did but the memory was shared with my Video Card so it didnt) and so Passive sensors were something that the Computer wouldnt give me))

So I say make fleet commanders be higher (or equal) in rank to everyone in their fleet, to allow me, when Im an Admiral and flying in an Intrepid, to have command over an AI Captain in a Galaxy.

Yeah.  Only thing is, you still can't get promoted past LTC.  Maybe when the "real" patch comes out...

Incorrect, rank promotions now work in D3 with this patch. We tested for this as one of our major bugs so unless you can prove that it's now NOT working, please don't spread around false info.

Well I guess I'm just getting passed over for promotion then.

If I'm wrong about this, I apologize.  No further comments from me on this matter, although I must point out that I'm not the first to say it doesn't seem fixed yet.

You just hit on why ship class was used instead of rank.

First understand that in general all the AIs are "ranked" the same, some do seem to advance but no one has really sat and watched (can you say paint drying?) to be certain. So the next best thing is to base it on class. This is for two reasons: 1) an officer that commands a DN  should be a higher rank than one in charge of a FF, and 2) squardons are typically not made up of more than one capital ship and escorts, rare would be the time you'd see a 3 wide squadron of DNs but if you went by rank then that's possible. So doing it by ship class was agreed to be a good fix that covered most bases. Not perfect but certainly better than seeing a FF leading two BBs around like attack dogs.

How much pp have you earned and on what server? Remember I'm speaking of D3 not single player.

I am at work right now and I can't remember exactly how much PP I earned on TNB Galaxy (?) last night, but I played for at least 6 hours straight AFTER it was reset due to the Rommies not being able to join.  (After that, It worked like a champ I might add, very smooth server with a good map, I had no disconnects or weird issues for that whole time, it was great.)  It seemed to me that at least one promotion should have been in order by that time.

That said however I must admit that I don't know what the PP increments are for rank in general for SFC3 since I've never known promotion to actually occur, and I make no claim to be a server admin type.

As for single player, I didn't play long enough to be sure.  I completed the first 4 Klingon missions without seeing any promotion.

Once again, it wasn't my intention to "spread false information" as you say, I was just blowing off a little steam via a smartass remark (I thought.)  I was going on what seems true based on my own (non-scientific) observations, I have no reason to spread lies about a possible bug in the game.  It just seems that if I look at how long it took to get promoted in EAW or OP, either it's a lot tougher to get promoted, or it's still not working.

Could they still have been using 1.00? Are you sure this is in the new patch? Understand that I ask this not to insult but to verify. A "patch" (1.01/v500) server is not visiable to games that are not at the same patch level (and vice versa) so I just want to be sure we're not comparing apples and oranges here.

From testing, the new 1.01 patch compliant servers did give rank increases, but if they aren't now then I want to know.

I will do some more "testing" (read: having a blast playing on the server) tonight after work (if it's still up) and post if/when I get a promotion, or if I see others who have been promoted past LTC.

As for this particular server, I think it was called TNB Galaxy, with the desription line "Diamonds are forever."  I am fairly certain it was using the new "Beta" patch since it was the first server I saw come up on my selection screen, and until GFL got on, along with the Litterbox test, it was the only one I could see to choose from.  Plus, all the other fixes as stated in the patch "readme" were working, i.e. I could repair my cloak, etc.

If anyone else reading this HAS gotten a promotion in D3 play, please post to that effect so that I can have a big slice of crow pie.

Can we expect the single player fixes (promotion, Stardate bug in conquest) to be fixed come the 'official' patch from ACVI?
