Can't enter CD Key After installing Orion Pirates
« on: March 15, 2004, 03:21:53 pm »
With all the recent wonderfull stuff out for OP I decided to re-install it over the week-end. After the install I tried to enter my CDkey when prompted but could not. The "Enter CD Key" command prompt would not accept any keyboard input. It's been awhile since I played OP and the last time I did I was running Win98. Now I am running XP. I did not have this problem when running Win98. I have also not had this problem with other games. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

Hmm, how did I do it when I installed it that one time on XP...

Actually I think it was SFC2 that I had problems with, but similar...

I think I did an alt-tab and then reopened the window so that things would actually register when doing them onscreen.  Perhaps that could help you...

the other way is to use the other startup located at C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates/StarfleetOP to start the game.

Stephen is correct. Change your target startup directory to the one he has indicated and all will be solved. No more *bonk* when you try to enter the key.

Yep!

It just happened to me. I never had a problem before with using either version of the start program but at my last reinstall (after about a 10 months) I had to change the target.

Well it worked. Not exactly as you stated. Not only did I have to start from the .exe file in the root directory but I had to change my resolution to 1024 x 768. Then it worked. Why that made a diffence I have no idea. Oh well.
Thanks

That's interesting, Care to share your Video card, and are you running at 16 or 32 bit ?

Thanks

FX5200 running at 32 Bit. Another thing I found was my keyboard is also inactive while in-game. The solution was to hit ESC (ALT-TAB didn't work) which brought me to the desktop and then clicking on the minimized game. When the game came back the keyboard was then functional. Really weird I know but what can I say.

That is all fixed now with the new target directory, right?

I went to the StarfleetOP.exe  file in the C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates directory and created a shortcut on the desktop. It is happening with this. Is this the right target?

here is a screen shot for the shortcut..

If you have the game installed to the default directory....

make sure that Target says

"C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates\StarfleetOP.exe"

and that Start in says :

"C:\Program Files\Taldren Software Inc\Starfleet Command Orion Pirates"

if these are not set correctly, it will cause shuttle, fighter, and PF problems in game.. and at times cause game to crash. It can also cause keyboard problems when launching game.

This is listed in the Readme.txt file since patch 2.5.4.12 until present.... it poped up for you to read during patch install.. Surprising people don't read thost things.

anyhow I hope that this helps.

OK I know what I did wrong. I had a shortcut to SFCOP.exe not StarfleetOP.exe. Changed it and now it works like a charm.
Thanks man.

I just bought OP (I know...a little slow on the uptake) and had the same problem with XP (entering the product key).  I found that if I hit the "escape" key it would free up the keyboard (or whatever was locked up) and then I could put in the code.  I think using the "Alt-Tab" approach would work.  Not a programmer at all, but sometimes it seems Windows just needs a little nudge or bump to get it working again.  Luck to all.

Welcome to the Boards BTW.

One reason that we make the change to the other shortcut, is there have at times been trouble launching Figthers/shuttles in the past, using the original one. Besides, It's just an old habit for us oldtimers.

anyway, Welcome to the boards, And If you have any questions, Feel free to ask.

John.. the issue is tied directly in with the shortcut.. if you read my posting above and check the properties of your shortcut and make sure it is correct, then the issue will go away.

to see a shortcut properties.. right click on the shortcut and select properties.
