How do you win a planetary assault in a nebula
« on: February 24, 2003, 11:37:24 pm »
Please excuse this question from an almost new player (its been a long time since I played sfc2), but I was on the SFC 7.35 server and entered a planetary assault mission on a planet in a nebula.  Quickly I found out that my marines could not be sent to the planet.  What should I have done?

BTW   This is my first post here so please be nice to me even when I ask stupid questions.  And hello to all of you.  I am flying under the name of SOS-Caligula on the above mentioned server, but decided to change my name to something more ladylike for the forums and the future.  So if you see me, say hello and try not to blow me up too often.

Wow, I told the boys at fleet command not to let a GIRL into our club!  How are the vets here supposed to take us seriously with questions like that??  They're going to tell us to go back to SFC3 and hang out with all the newbs!  They won't let us play on their next server!

LOL.  Just kidding, fleetmate.  You know I still think you are the cutest Rom around.

Actually, I'm afraid you are out of luck.  You can't capture planets in a nebula.  Sounds like someone goofed with the map.

Yup someone goofed. It is impossible to capture in a nebula.

You can.

Given enough firepower.

Thus, thats why we are now selling: MASS DRIVERS

Buy your mass Driver today, and be able to shoot asteroids at planets.

Thank you all for our replies, I was wondering if I had forgotten something.

P.S. Skor

Just remember, that a "GIRL" had to save you from all those big bad Feddie Sovereigns in SFC3 once upon a time....

And yes I am a cuter Rom than you, sweetie.

Also big kisses for GDA Doc who directed me here, thank you so much...

Actually ...

In some past versions of EAW or OP (don't recall which at the moment), sometimes you could get a Victory (not Astounding Victory) by destroying all the defenders and then leaving the map. However, I think that might have been in base assaults, and may have had something to do with the mission victory awards. I wouldn't recommend trying it with a planet assault in a nebula.

This sounds like something Dave "Nuclear" Wessels (the Evil one) should take into account for his custom missions, though. Oh Dave ...

If you're able to launch a shuttle in a nebula, I'd like to see how you did it. Has the code changed THAT much since the last time I played EAW?

Yup, forgot about that. The trick is you have to launch the shuttle before entering the nebula

Heh, funny you should mention that.  Most map makers now refrain from putting a major planet in a nebula, but (just in case) I figured I better make the mission winnable. Anyway, the last time I did an update to planet assault I took the easy way out  - if a planet assault occurs in a nebula hex the mission would be fought in a regular-space map with a bunch of dust clouds.

Someday soon I'll rewrite the victory conditions instead.  What I was thinking as the victory requirements was (1) destroy all defenders, and  (2) reduce the planet's marine complement to minimal (4?) through bombardment.

Why not? Sounds like a good addition, especially since everybody wants to jump thru hoops with custom shiplists.

I don't know.  I remember that you could launch GAS in multiplayer when the game first appeared.  I wish you could still.  Maybe Talden thought that GAS's made ship capture too easy.  Mind you, I might disagree with that statement.  GAS are supposed to be the Gorn "thing".

And Caligula:  please stop kissing GDA-DocPsycho.  He's a married man!

LATE EDIT:  Actually, putting homeworlds in a nebula hex might not be such a bad idea.  Their invulnerability could help admins design campaigns that were wars over resources, rather than just homeworld humps.

The only catch is that other missions, which are winnable AND easier than homeworld assaults, still come up in the homeworld hex

Hmmmmm ... I could stick a test-for-homeworld into every hostile-territory mission, and bump up the difficulty substantially when the mission comes up in a homeworld hex.  I'll experiment a bit - it certainly could be done.

I suppose I should have signed on long ago. Red Shirt!   BAH!

Nevertheless, I made it.  So when does this Day of Delay thing start up?    Will there be rules?  What fleets play on D2?

In D3 you dont have to take the planet just destroy the defenders.

I attacked a planet in D2 on the 7.35 server but it had like 30 defenders and my marines just got killed as fast as I could beam them down.

Forget the nebula as I know transporters or much of anything else doesnt work.

I cannot take a planet in open space.  How do u win these??????

I am very confused.   Am I doing something wrong or is this some kind of funny game bug?????

Hail,

Nice to see new players.

Silva,

Unlike D3 in D2 u can attack the planet for damages.  As u damage the planet u will kill some of the defenders.  To a minimum level of 2.  Once at two defenders u can beam down attackers to take the planet.  I would suggest that u attack the planet with every thing in ur ships arsenel.

OHHH
In D2 the planets themselves can be armed.  They have heavy phasers on them (some mods have other nasty weapons also).   If you are familiar with attacking star bases in D3 then you will have a feel for how brutal some of the D2 planets can be (the actual D2 starbases are another matter believe me!!!!!!).

If I see any of your fleet mates online I will be more than willing to provide any help that I can.

In order to capture anything in D2 you have to get troops on board.

On a ship that means dropping a shield, plinking troops (non-lethal fire), and then beaming abaord your own when you can get equal or superior numbers. The alternative is hitting the ship to the point of exploding, without actually blowing it up and then landing troops.

For planets you must destroy the defenses, including troops, and then land your own troops. This is harder when you get an armed planet. Some planets can have several plasmas and photons as well as a slew of PH4's (phasers so big and powerful, only planets and stations can utilize them).

Nebulas limit your options such as no shuttles, tranporters, and mines. As well as reduced shields and all weapon ranges and damage.

Oh and the AI has a superior level of stupidity.

Not quite the same game huh?

BTW: Cleo, you wouldn't happen to be Blonde would you?

Damage scored on the planet - once you're through it's shields etc - also gradually kills off the marines.  Just keep hammering the planet with whatever weaponry you've got, and watch the marine count for the planet.  Once it drops down to something reasonable *then* start sending the marines in.   It can  go quite quickly, or can take quite awhile - depends on the firepower you've got.

No, I'm not blonde, Mr. Goose

I may not know as much about the SFC2 game as some of my fleet, and they might have made me leader because they got a kick out of having a "princess" to champion, but don't think I'm target for any blonde jokes.  Also, a blonde woman is still a lady and you should remember that!

Like I told MR. Gwarlock,

In a battle of skill you might defeat me, but in a battle of wits, I'm female, so you have already lost.

Say yes dear and save youself a lot of trouble.

If your married say yes dear right away dear....

Although I have a repetoire of over 300 hundred Blonde jokes (got them here somewhere if you want them), that is not what I was asking.

The reason I wanted to know is that there is a certain lady I've been talking to at work who was very interested in playing Rom in D3. Since there are not a lot of ladies that play this game (let alone ones who play D3 Roms) I thought that you might be them since you appeared right around the same time I was talking to her. This lady has blond hair.

Apparently you are not her.  Damn!  and I was going to take credit for recruiting you.

So you might want to keep your eyes open for another D3 Rom Lady (no name yet).

You wouldn't know AlienLXIX by any chance?

Oh and uh, for the record...

Yes dear right away dear.

I gotta feeling she may know a certain cat who was playing Klingon at GamerZ (assuming that Cleo is actually a girl and not part of some hellaciously funny charade).
