Post your internet speed!
« on: March 09, 2004, 10:08:13 pm »
Frigging Mexicans and their stupid arse cable companies that are ten years behind! Where is "free trade?" Where are the business opportunities for American and Canadian cable companies?

So, I found this tool, it tests your internet speed. I tested mine, and I get only 200 Kbs. So I ask Leda to test ours in Austin since we use roadrunner by Time Warner Cable. Her results? A whopping 2200 Kbs! Damn near T1 on the graph!

I'm curious about what people get from all over the world, so please take a moment and visit this site, and post your results. I'm madder than Hades as they charge 40 bucks (same as roadrunner) yet piss poor speed and service. The cable company here will really hate me upon my return, as I'm buying a printer and printing the site and go door to door and ask them to ask their friends all over the world to do the same and see how they are getting bufued with their internet services just like PEMEX does with their dirty and high priced gasoline. Then they can call their cable company and demand better service.

http://theboost.net/active.htm

Click on the purple words "try active speed today" (it will NOT download anything), and will give you test results in a few seconds.

Free trade my arse, Time Warner cable could really rake it in here in Mexico, as well as their stocks would skyrocket from the millions of new customers! 104 million potential new roadrunner and cable customers.

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to seeing some results.

Your Internet speed: 795 kilobits per second Sat.

You know, it will take at least 25 years. In most estiments before "country" people like me. Get Cable\Roadrunner\dsl etc. Service.

In my area.  10*10 square mile ='s 2,000 people. In mexico city, There is 26,000,000 people in a 10*10 square mile radius called Mexico City.

20 people per square mile vrs. 260,000 people per square mile.

Which one do you think Is the better investment?

So freaking 2nd world countries will have DSL before me.

I'd take any results from a speed test provided by someone trying to sell you a speed enhancer with a grain of salt, man.  Its giving me results well below what I know to be true.  384 K/s.  This is impossible because I reach download speeds of around 120k/s.

Thanks Joker, although the results from that test (from your link) were more disappointing than the one I found.

download: 122Kbs

upload: 56 Kbs

Your connection hardly qualified as broadband, at least in that test.

I'll be interested in giving Leda your link and finding out what roadrunner in Austin runs with that test.

I really appreciate the help guys, you see the cable companies (most) in Mexico are owned by one person or a few people, and there is normally always only one company (Mexico loves monopolies). Their employees are not the brightest (not their fault as the owners do not train them well like Time Warner or SBC would), they are poorly paid, no benefits besides free cable, and if they get hurt on the job? No pay at all or anything! Now Vicky told me she talked to the cable company and they can provide a faster service for 10 dollars more (how fast I do not know, nor do I care), and I told her I already pay the same as roadrunner and get crappy service and I have to have basic cable as well, so why pay ten dollars more for something I should ALREADY HAVE? Time Warner used to have that years ago, but they dropped it and you can get roadrunner service alone if you want.

Like I said, I'm going to show the citizens of Chihuahua (universities and companies and govt. included) how they are getting really ripped off by their own cable company. 1.5 million people plus can make a difference if you stir them up a bit.

There are many things going on here that will make your eyes glow red with anger, but I'm saving that for hot and spicy and when Bush tries to be sneaky in his "agenda" for legalizing approx 8 million illegal aliens. In case many of you did not know, Bush already dropped the fingerprinting and photographing of people entering the country through our southern border, and Bush had Fox over at his ranch last week (hence no news on Bush). Funny how they have not told the press the results of their discussions.

Let's not change the thread, but get some speed tests and results. With this data and info from Time Warner cable (they have a huge office center in Austin) when I go speak with their public affairs manager, I can return to Chihuahua and tell them you are not only getting ripped off, but there are American companies that can provide 24/7 service, much faster internet speed, and great cable options if only your Federal govt. would abide by fair trade. The best thing for the citizens of Chihuahua would be the employment and training opportunities, thus that many less illegals wanting to enter the U.S. as they would have a good job. As for us? Some Americans would be needed to manage the company offices, and others would be needed to train the field workers and manage them, and cost of living in Mexico is a lot cheaper than the U.S. and I would advise buying stock in TW if they are able to break into the Mexican market.

http://www.timewarnercable.com/dispatcher/aboutUs;jsessionid=00005RF3YNF3VMJD0F5D4R20APQ:-1?category=10075&rootCategory=10075

11 million customers? How about a potential 104 million? I know 104 million can't afford it or might not choose, but let's say 40-60 million do choose TW, that's a LOT of frigging customers!

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=TWX&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-tab-web-t&cop=mss&tab=

$17.10 very affordable even for us po folk. With entry in Mexico under fair trade? I could see it going to 70 or 80 EASY.

I'm only using TW as an example, there are MANY American companies that could benefit from true "free trade" and believe me, the Mexicans would LOVE for American companies to come down here and provide employment and invest in Mexico.

Now that I spoke about that, I wonder where Erik has been hiding? I'm interested to see what his speed results are in Korea. Also Nob and results from Japan, and let's not forget our Canadian and European friends!

Again, many thanks for your time and results.

MS, you underestimate cable and sat companies. While it may be true that they prefer largely populated areas, they also want to cover as much area as possible (sort of like cell phone companies and such), so initially the higher populated areas would get priority, BUT this generates huge income, and expansion is the rule if you want to compete. Sooner or later all of America will be wired, need an example? Canada, who would think it is the most connected country (internet wise) in the world? Your turn is coming brother, they do not give away all that money to shareholders ya know, there is R&D expenses, possible cash reserve to buy another company out, and of course, EXPANSION!

I am of the opinion that that 25 year estimate is excessive with a more reasonable ,if you are not the person waiting, 10 years until all but the most isolated people will have a high speed internet option other than satallite. If you have cable television available I would say that 5 years is more likely since if the cable companies want to sell you the more profitable digital channels they will be upgrading the lines.

Thanks for the tests, I cannot believe I'm in one of the most "modern" cities in Mexico and I'm paying the same as in the states, yet here in Mexico I get "dogsh*te" and in Texas Leda is getting almost T1 capability at home and at work with high speed roadrunner!

I've been doing research, from what I am getting so far, U.S. and Canadian cable companies CAN invest and build a cable network in Mexico. I need to e-mail the Mexican Sec. of commerce and trade to get a confirm though. Pirating has been their biggest problem here, but the laws are getting stricter as Mexico is trying to get modernized, and I know for a fact that TW has the capability to know when and where a line is spliced for pirating. They got so much high tech equipment, they can see the status of your modem and loss of bandwidth to your modem, all from the company office!

Bandwith Place say:

3.3 megabits per second
Communications  = 3.3 megabits per second
Storage  = 397.2 kilobytes per second

Subjective rating Awesome

I reckon this means I can choke on spam quicker than most.

I envy you guys.  Down here in Toronto, Canada, I only have Rogers (Cable) and Bel (DSL)l to choose from.
Rogers consider the speed that I'm getting to be acceptable for "service as is".

 http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/525035;370885;b21a34ea7f9bdb3a0f8b40166eaaef06;2.0;speedtest.cogeco.net/1078967357

There are a lot of people that aren't even getting half of the advertised 3 mbps and the funniest thing is that Rogers is actually coming out with a new package that gives us 5 mbps when they can't even deliver consistent 3 mbps to their customers.

Too bad we're stuck with Rogers here in Toronto since there's no other cable ISPs here.

That what all the Tech's told me. 10-25 years.

Cable TV did try and quit a couple years ago. Step in my area, and you will think you went back 50 years. Miles of Corn with nearly a neighbor in sight.

Digital wires in 15 years. Thats the estimate, I got from a tech friend for sprint. That services our area. I tried IDSN and was slowed down to "dial-up" speeds. Due to our archaic copper wires.

And in my area there is little demand for "Broadband". One tried a years ago and quit. Out of 1000 people called in my area Me and five people stated they wanted Cable Broadband. The rest stated "no".

Wireless though might be something to look into though in a couple of years.

They can do broadband over power lines. Power lines are ubiquitous. The modem picks up the modulated signal carried into your house with your electricity. Just requires a special modem and of course a service provider to modulate and demodulate the signals and act as a node.

I also read that some utilities were going to offer broadband over powerlines.  I recently purchased two Netgear XE102 Wall Bridges to set up a small home network for myself.  Each plugs into a wall outlet and I have an ethernet connection using the power lines.  I get about 12-14 Mbs which is a little better than 802.11b wireless.

104 million potential new roadrunner and cable customers.

http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/mx.html#People

Thanks for your time, and I look forward to seeing some results.

Thanks Joker, although the results from that test (from your link) were more disappointing than the one I found.

5.3 Mb per second... got about 700k/sec on the one you provided JMM.  We have a 10 Mb pipe here and I "dialed" everyone down for a few seconds to test it.  I have had sustained transfer rates of 1.3 MB per second.

You're paying for a 10Mb pipe? Or is that an employer thing?

If it's your employers then you can not claim to have a bigger pipe you know.

1MB file download  = 2.6 seconds
Subjective rating Awesome

I reckon this means I can choke on spam quicker than most.

http://homepage.eircom.net/~leslie/testpage/testlrge.htm?5682873

Is another place...

I listed at

136570

I don't know how I get these speeds though, since my connection isn't actually all that terribly fast at my location!

Strange...

The 111 upload was more what my speeds probably should be...

You might luck out in get the utility line form of broadband. It requires no new infrastructure to speak of.
