Beautiful fence and front door gate at house in Mexico, but the Mexicans do not have the brains to lay primer down and sand it roughly before painting, hence the rust and just plain cheap job on expensive fencing and gate. I remember, years ago when I was in auto tech school, I was restoring my brother in law's 69 Camaro. I sandblasted the subframe (car sat in yard forever before that), and DuPont made this green liquid that you mixed with water, applied to the metal surface, left on for about 5-10 minutes, then rinsed with water. After drying it would not oxidize anymore, and you could apply your coats of primer. My question is this, Is primer waterproof? I did not take a chance with the Camaro parts that I finished and put them in a shed, thus no water exposure.
I have a paint remover, so that is no problem. If I have to sand the rust down, so be it, though I take a LOT longer to do things than I did a couple of years ago. I just like doing things right the first time if I am able. I just do not want to lay primer coats down and come back from Texas just to find my efforts were for nought. I have a paint spray gun (compressor operated) in Texas that I will bring to Mexico to do the job right.
Any info is greatly appreciated.
