Nvidia to bundle Doom 3 with graphics cards
« on: March 04, 2004, 08:25:19 am »
Nvidia plans to push its sales of its graphics cards by bundling the online game, Doom 3, to be launched by id Software in April, according to sources.

id Software said earlier this week that it recommended the Nvidia GeForce FX series of graphics cards for the soon-to-be released Doom 3.

To emphasise the endorsement, a special sticker has been designed for the GeForce FX packaging indicating that the product is 'Recommended by id Software for Doom 3'.

Nvidia is also likely to bundle the game with its new-generation NV40 graphics cards, due to be launched in the second quarter of this year, according to the sources.

The Nvidia/id software venture is expected to put pressure on Nvidia's rival, ATI Technologies, which has reached an agreement with design house Valve to bundle the online game, Half Life 2, with its cards.

Due to the delayed launch of Half Life 2, ATI is now planning to initially bundle another Valve game, Counter-Strike (CS), with its cards. The ATI/CS combo is slated for launch in early April, sources said.

If they really wanted to boost sales, they'd release the card with the game a month earlier than just the game.  wOw!

Rumor has it ID Software isn't too happy with ATI. *Rumor* has it that the leaked alpha copy of D3 had a fingerprint that was traced to ATI as the leak. The solution was to deny ATI any more updates on D3 and Nvidia gets the head start on optimizing their cards for D3.

It would take me a little while to find the links dicussing these rumors, but it is interesting, especially if true.

Well, it will definitely boost sales for Nivida.

Still though, it's going to feel good to be heading back to the gates of hell to save the universe again.

Nvidia stock did well last quarter, and they are a strong company. I use an Nvidia in my Sony P4, quite happy with it thank you. I'm not sure about putting games with a video card. Sony did the same crap with my P/C, they had Laura Croft tomb raider, needless to say it got deleted ASAP.

Personally I'm more excited about Doom 3 than HL2. I don't think HL2 will be the same with out the black Messa facility.
