A must read, imho.

For any of you planning on following a career in game programming, or even if you wanna be a freelance game developer this article is a must read, imho.

 Ten or twenty years ago it was all fun and games. Now it's blood, sweat, and code.

Welp, not one comment, but it's a meaty article to read and may not merit comment.

Here's a book along the same lines that some of you might be interested in reading:

Not just code/design complexity but just the artwork apects alone.  Look at game credits recently and see how there are often as many artists as there are code developers and designers.

I could handle the code aspects of game programming, I am sure.  But I would be useless in an artwork department!

Not to overestimate my abilities but I'm sure I'm qualified ot be the office coffe boy.

One thing I've found intriiguing is the need for some game developers to develop at least 2 sets of artwork for differing display sizes/windowed mode thus doubling the development effort for 1 title.

EDIT: PS: I can only imagine what kind of havoc widescreen monitor is about to unleash for developers.

Yep it's all that fun and more.  

My advice to anyone interested in getting into games
is, don't, unless your young single and your needs are
few.  It's a young man's game <pun noted> not for the
faint of heart.  If you think you will just be "playing games
all day" think again.  The only people that get to play all
day are QA, and once the game gets fun, they take it
away from you and stick it on a store shelf.
