1) I always prefer a standard CRT monitor to a LCD for gaming, graphics, etc..
Refresh rates are about the same as a regular monitor (60-90hz)

2) There really isn't any hard limit on the size of a computer monitor...but keep in mind as you increase the size of the monitor you also increase the resolution necessary to make a usable display. Many video cards can only handle so large a resolution, and you take a performance hit at the highest resolution possible in addition to being limited to lower refresh rates.

The limits are really practical in nature. You don't want a monitor so large it won't fit on the average sized desk.

A PC can port itself to a tv screen...but why would you want to? Keeping in mind standard TV is 320x120 resolution...which is pretty damn poor when compared to even an old 640x480 monitor. I believe some of the newer plasma displays can take aux inputs from a computer at high resolution.

I have a digital vid cam that is stuck at 320*120. And that does not look good on a computer. With VHS becoming obsolete. I am trying to figure a way to convert a cd-rom unto a TV via DVD or another format. For my wife.

I got a 19inch CRT. Looks great, and if any bigger. It would fall off the desk.

Thanks for all your advice. And thanks to SL-punisher for mentioning the low video resolution of TV. I always wondered why Sears Video displays looked so much better then my home made vids.

Make a video cd..most cd burning programs can do it. Most DVD players will play video-cd's

Depends on the cd-burning program...mine will automatically convert avi/mpg to VCD

Actually, while some LCD's ghost real bad, there are some newer one's that only ghost on stuff that is moving way too fast to see it clearly anyway.

I myself have a Viewsonic VX2000 (20" 1600 x 1200 resolution) The thing is the response time (similar to refresh rate). The responce time is the minimum time it takes for a pixel to darken and lighten fully. The responce time on this monitor is 25 ms. Most LCD monitors the responce time is 50 or more. Basically the difference between this monitor and a CRT is so minimal that the plusses so far outweigh the minuses that I wouldn't go back.

I play BattleFront 1942, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal 2, Medal of Honor, SFC2, OP, and 3 on it and it is great unless I do a fast spin in a first person shooter. Then it will depend on the game. UT2003 the only ghosting I ever noticed was with bright red spots. They would ghost ever so slightly with a super fast pan. Other wise the 600:1 contrast and clairity blow away any CRT, plus, it is FLAT!!!. No glare whatever, everything is super crisp and clean.

Note that I am driving it with an ATI Radion 9800 pro with the DVI port.

Been thinking about adding a second one for double the desktop space.

2) Why is it that monitors usually are small 15-21""inch and HDTV can be over 48". Why Can't I actually buy a freaking large monitor?:) (If the x-box can port a Pc on to a TV screen. Why can't a PC port itself to a TV screen?)

Somebody have a small plane so I can ship my old 17"" to Hawaii?

I Believe the Refresh rates have gotten Better, However, the Supply and demand of LCD moniters above 17" Has risen, And we will see a slight rise in the cost of them .

Actually A pc can port Itself to a TV screen But It takes a little bit of tweaking. Awhile back, around 2-3 years ago, My wife got me a large screen TV for X-mas. It was an RCA I believe, and I played the heck out of EAW on that thing. But like I said, IT did take abit of work to get It going. Oh yea, I think It was SG1 that I played on that Monster 50".

Alas , the tuner went out, and we sold It amongst other thing about a year ago.

LCD Ghosts like a MF'r. I would not suggest getting an LCD screen since CRT still rocks. Problem is space and heat.

Thats what I heard. Thank you for confirming. What I thought, but didn't know for certain.

As for HDTV. You can play a computer on a HDTV with the right videocard. My friend does on his and he has a 50". It looks good but still not as good as a monitor in my opinion. Looks a bit more pixilated then I would like but there is nothing like having a Kvort bigger then your VCR rocking some Fed AI DN and watching it explode. Also, CoD on the 50" HDTV ROCKS.

What would be the crossover for the pixel effect becoming too large. How large before it lacks clarity?

I am tired of squinting to play Diablo II (exp) on a 17"" monitor.

Oh man, I can't recall. At the time I Had A geforce 2 MMX Nvidia card, and had to buy a Longer Svideo cable to support hte video out, But that was about It. I ahd a hard time getting the two to talk to each other, But I didn't understand Pal vs NATC (sp) either at the time. One thing I did do , was make sure the TV could support a PC . I believe I was also stuck at around 800x 400 res, or what ever It's called.

But IT was Pretty neat.

I believe SghnDubh had his PC connected to a projecter and was running SFC through It, at a whopping 80" x 60" Screen. He made a few Pics on the last Forums we had, But you may want to ask him about It.
