All that has been posted is true, but if you want an analogy of F&E it's like Risk for SFB.

PS. .. sorry.. no Risk cards.. but you do gain the Economic value of your new territory to build new units, so close enough.

All good posts, but not getting into the nuts and bolts of how it works...

You control EVERYTHING in your Empire(s). (REALLY a pain in the ass when you control more than one Empire, you need a player for each!)

You control diplomatic relations with planets in your empire, and with other Empires. You set which starships are going to be built, which variants of which starships are going to be built, etc. How many ships get the "+" upgrade this year, EVERYTHING.

Ship combat can be resolved strategically, by a die-roll ( An F-CA almost always beats a K-D6, etc) OR you can resolve individual combats with SFB. WARNING:::: THIS option will make individual turns take WEEKS/MONTHS and games take YEARS!!!!

Which really kicks ass, but makes for a bitch when Thanksgiving comes and you need the big table!

Have a nice day!

Just an observation, but I've always found it strange that this game people defend so fervently here (SFB), 99% of the copies ever issued of it are sitting in closets gathering dust.  My own copy is in the same state.

Perhaps 99% of the copies YOU are aware of, lol.

SFB is still actively played around the country/world in tournaments, including Origins. Many hobby shops have groups that game on a regular basis, and proably do so in your area as well.

Granted, however, it is much harder to find play time and players in the age of 500 channels, DVD Trek, Xbox, PC gaming, streaming internet porn, etc.

Have a nice day!

For me the computer game is an opportunity to play SFB with other people.  Something which I never had the opportuinty to do.  My friends back then just did not like pen and paper type games.

For the analogy, I was thinking of the Total War series of computer games.

You get to control the provincial economy, buildings constructions, units trainings. and When a conflict needs to be fought, either the computer can do it auto or you can go in the fight it yourself.

(BTW I am totally hooked on Medieval Total War... Except I haven't found the counter unit to Nubian Spearmen in Early era yet, and they are massacreing me. )

SFB is a really, really huge game.  It fills an entire shelf in my walk-in closet.  While I have played games with all of this material, I never play with more than 1% during any given setting.  Thus, the other 99% sit on my shelf while I'm playing.

Simple, eh?

My wife never did figure out why I wanted TV trays for Christmas.

Wife:"OK dear. Let's clear off the table for dinner."
Me: "Oh honey! Can't we use those really nice TV trays you bought me?"
