I don't know why this is so needed. I am on dial-up and got all the updates for XP Pro in two sessions. Granted they were overnight sessions.

It's also a sysadmin tool - sometimes going on the LAN with an unpatched machine is bad - there are still worms like welchia etc roaming around.

Winblows update isnt quick enough to patch a vulnerable machine before it gets wormed.

Yup, or people like me who repair computers on the side. I repair computers on college campus and other student complexes where n00bs experience broadband for the first time and more than likely start downloading any spyware-enhanced P2P program they can get their hands on, equaling a plethora of viruses and spyware. Most of them have little to no internet connectivity by the time I'm called in and even a few with CPU usage being 100% constantly due to the computer being out of date as it is

You have no idea the magnitiude of that understatement.

I used to dislike virus writers and script kiddies. Now that I work in MS's PC Saftey call-center, I loathe and despise them. String 'em up by the short'n curlies and skin 'em alive, then apply copious amounts of turpentine while rubbing the raw meat with 20-grit sand paper, then coat thoroughly with alcohol prior to setting ablaze. That comes close to how I feel about these malignant creatures. Almost...

I just read this and thought I would share.  Apparently Microsoft has compiled all of the security updates for Win98, Win98se, Win Me, Win2000, and WinXP on to a CD.  This CD includes Microsoft critical updates released through October 2003 and information to help you protect your PC as stated on the Microsoft web site.  There is no charge for the CD or for the shipping.  The Microsoft web site states that it will take two to four weeks to deliver.  Those of you who use Microsoft OS may want to take advantage of this free offer to help protect your system.  For me this will be a lot easier than waiting for downloads off the Microsoft web site.  You can order the CD from this Microsoft web site.  Hope this helps.

Thanks, for all the crap microsoft gets occasionly they do something pretty decent.  Although it would be nice if the security holes hadn't existed in the first place.

Thanks J! A dear friend is shipping me Windows 98 in ingles (English) since I'm using a Dell while in Mexico and Dell in their infinite stupidness only included Windows ME and other disks in spanish

I'm glad to see we can get a free CD from Microsoft, but hey, Bill Gates can afford it.
