 You can own 867-5309

I get enough wrong numbers as it is without going out of my way to get the nutcases who just HAVE to see if Jenny is home.

Think thats bad, My old phone number and a appartment managers number were two digits off, we had a lot of calls asking about how much our rooms went for or if we had any for rent.

My phone number for the last almost 10 years has been 1 digit off from a local pharmacy.

If I had a nickel for every wrong number we'd gotten over the years I'd be a millionaire.  People will even get rude with us when they can't refill their prescriptions.

Our answering machine started with the usual message about you've reached the xxxx, please leave your name etc.  People would listen to the whole message and then leave a message about getting a prescription.

Then we changed it to you have reached the xxx NOT the pharmacy.  If you are trying to reach the pharmacy, please hang up and try again.  People would listen to the whole message and then leave their message about a prescription.

Now we have my daughter saying a rhyme with our name in it.  We don't get many messages now on the machine.

With caller-id we know have a good idea when it's a wrong number.  Of course there is one lady who calls us at least three times a week.  Now when she calls, I say hello Shanta, you've got the wrong number for the pharmacy.  Have a nice day.

hmm the seller is incorrect in saying anyone can have that number. WLNP means that the number can be attached to another provider in the same LOCAL area....., not nationwide.

We are one digit off from a place that does free vet work.  I remember one lady calling up with a deep Southern accent on our answering machine saying "I'm calling about my cat, Lulu....I need to get her fixed."

My wife joked that we should call her back and say "Well, I'm not sure if we can help you --but I think I do have a butcher knife around here somewhere if you want me to give it a try..."

I was stationed at a GATR (Ground-to-Air-Transmitter/Receiver) site on the end of Long Island in NY (Montauk), the phone number for which was one number off from Pizza Hut.

No one ever called us trying to get ahold of the GATR site, so we took to answering the phone "Pizza Hut!" and then advertising a special for Lobster Pizza (pick up only).

Sometimes we'd drive down to the Pizza Hut to watch people try to pick up their Lobster Pizza.  Great fun.

I always wanted to try that but never had the guts to do it. My dad would have smacked me up side the head for acting like that on the phone if he found out about it. And I still dont do it to this day either. Guess something good from him rubed off on me.

I was 19, bored, and the senior person at the site (out of the two of us).  They rolled up the sidewalks in Montauk when it got dark (especially in winter), so that was about it for entertainment.

There was no cable TV.

I get the impression this was from a movie, but no clue as to what it is.

Song - one of the lines of which was:

"For a good time, for a good time calll... 867-5309, 867-5309"

People who had that number got deluged with calls after the song was released.  Nobody at the time had thought about what would happen to people who actually had that phone number.
