My pathetic GF4 seems to be dying...
« on: February 15, 2004, 09:26:24 pm »
Any suggestions for a replacement?

I currently have a GeForce4 MX440 POS and I think it is giving up, hehe...

I was thinking about going ATI...

I'm not looking for anything uber right now, just something to use till I invest in my new homebuilt...

I've been using a puny ATI 8500 64MB for several years now
and it has worked great. It handles all the games that I play just
fine and when I play DVD's on my computer the picture quality
is great.

You can find better cards than the one I have for very little $$.

Since you are replacing a G4 MX440 almost any other card that you buy would be an upgrade.   Any G3/4 ti card or any of the lower end FX cards would be fine in the Nvidia world. In the ATI world I would think that the 8500 and 9000 series up to the 9600SE would work good. Anything higher than these such as the FX57xx, FX59xx, 9600/9800 Pro/xXT cards would be overkill and a waste of money in what I asume is a somewhat older computer unless you are planning on recycling the new card into a new computer in the near future.

If you're not looking for anything "uber" at the moment, how much are you looking to spend?  That might help guide to the right location.

Oh...uhmmm...okay...

I would suggest maybe an Nvidia...perhaps a GeForce 4 Ti (a much better and higher quality than what you had before).  You should be able to get them from a shop somewhere that specializes in computer parts.

You COULD get an Ati, but for that amount, I would say get an Nvidia instead...

In my opinion, the worthwhile Ati cards will start probably at around $150 USD unless you are very lucky.  Maybe as low as $130...but you'd have to keep your eyes up and alert I would think.

The GeForce 4 should be able to last you a year or so before being outdated...

I hear you on the tax thing; but I did see some non-ATI built Radeon cards both online and in brick and mortar stores that seem to be fairly reasonably priced, less than ATI's own cards.  But, I'd check with some reviews before I'd commit to one of these OEM Radeons, though, all nVidias are OEMs, aren't they?

nVidia hasn't built one of their own cards in a long time...so yes they are OEM...

Kinda makes you wonder about the whole 'The way it's meant to be played.' marketing campaign...

I mean if all you make is the GPUs, how the hell do you know if it is working right?

ATI at least sets their own standards and lets the third party companies compete with that...

Guess nVidia dun want to make a board to have someone else make a better one...or they spent all their money on Mars... :P

Didn't Nvidia actually follow a similar program.  Seems to me I read that they had one company make all the reference boards, and actually produce all of a batch of GeForceFX cards and then shipped out to the various developers (MSI, Visiontek, Gainward, etc.), thus pretty much everyone boards, straight off the mark were pretty much the same, only later when the OK was given for them all to start producing their own.

I saw an nVidia 9200 with 128MB of Ram for $80USD at Sam?s Club, if you have a membership or know someone that does you might want to check it out.  Hope this helps.

You should be able to get a 9600 around teh price you're lookin' for, I'd check pricewatch and of course always check out the vendor and make sure they are reliable, but there are several selling 9600's for 100 or under that are reputable.

If you want a lot of bang for a bit more buck, you might check out the Nvidia GeforceFX 5700 Ultra.  You can probably find one for less than $150 online.

Otherwise, the GeforceFX 5200 is a good buy.

Aaaargh!  I said 9600 in my previous post.  What I meant to say was 5600, as in GeforceFX, as in Nvidia.  I can't believe I could make such a mistake.
