Wouldn't that be a more accurate description of Mayweather?  A specialist pilot?  The one who handles the ship in conditions you can't trust the guy with just basic helm training?      



Then Archer must not trust anyone else but Mayweather to run the ship at any time because rarely do we see anyone else at the Helm Station. Either that or Enterprise has an extremely small , poorly trained, crew and relies on Autopilot when Travis is off-duty. Of course, it could be that there are other Helmsman-qualified personnel, but we just happen to look in on them when Travis is driving

Only having one guy driving the ship all the time is indicative of a crew structure that does not support cross-training of specialities.

I can agree with that to a large degree.  It is one of the flaws in all the Star Trek shows.  Odd how the Captain and the elite (senior) crewmembers are all on duty at the same time all the time .    Of course if they did it more realistically Mayweather would barely be a role, the extra of the day would always be on helm (prior to being killed of course).  Mayweather would only show up for tight maneuvering and battles.

My whinge was really that he is barely a role anyway. How often do you see him? In the background nodding to himself or floating around in the zero grav spot going "weee" I think the reason the crew we see are all on at the same time must be something to do with their rotor and the fact that t'pol never sleeps....she just "helps" trip "sleep"

You know, that's a good point. Traditionally, the Senior Officers would stand the First Watch of the day. The Captain would only stand a watch at his own discretion. Apparently, we must be looking in on them during the 8-12 Watch

Well, if we're only going to see the same 6 or 7 people every time, that is a waste of ship.

TNG and Voyager made a bit of an effort to change that, but it was still Teh-Senior-guy-with-pips-relieving-an-always-changing-Extra in a Red Shirt...

That I can understand.  Afterall who do you want at the helm in a life and death battle?  #1 or the junior guy who just barely qualified?  Having the top dogs take over when things get rough makes sense to me.  Sending the juniors to backup posts as well.  

Unfortunately being a TV show, the expense of actually hiring the 87 crew and fitting costumes etc when most of them will be seen briefly once or twice a season is unaceptable.  (How many marines were added to that 87 crew?  I don't recall.)

Surely theres more than one experienced helmsman on a crew of 87..let alone the 1000 odd on a galaxy class

There are several. Three shifts plus backup in fact. You only see the day crew, i.e. the 9 to 5ers. Occasionally you get the night crew in some episodes, but they never seem to have a problem waking all the senoir officers up at 3 a.m. to deal with a problem now do they?

And they always have time to get in uniform (but not in the movies) before the ship is attacked...

I would rather have guy inexperienced but awake. Over experienced lethargic veteren.

Of course, 500 years in the future. NoDOZE must be a miracle drug.
