Singleplayer D2 question--OP
« on: February 12, 2004, 09:58:49 pm »
Hi.  Long time lurker, first time poster here.  Question.  I've been playing a singleplayer D2 conquest campaign in OP, patched up, as the Klingons.  I've made some pretty serious inroads on the Federation, and wanted to take on the Romulans--but they're a "highly trusted ally".  Is there a way to turn them hostile so I can fight them?

Yes. You need to modify your Meta Map .gf file's Political Tensions. Set the Romulans and the Klingons to a number around 800 - 1000 (that's the maximum). You need to do it to both races (and any others you want hating each other) to get it to work well and I would suggest the same number for both or make them very close. Keep in mind that the game will start to make you less friendly on it's own if you start attacking them and eventually you will be enemies because they will be sick of you attacking their space even though you started as friends. There is an entry in the same file for that number as well. If you set it higher they will hate you faster as that number is added to the Political Tension value every time you attack them. The Meta Map file can be found by going into Meta Assets, then Server Profiles, then Single Player. You can open it with Notepad. Be sure to back up the file before you mod it.

Somewhere in the patching process, the MetaMap.gf file got its "Read Only" box checked. I haven't checked since the most recent patch came out, but it was like that with the next most recent. You'll need to right-click the file, select Properties, and uncheck the "Read Only" box for any alterations to be saved.

One more thing - I can't be sure, but I think you might have to start the campaign over for it to work as Political Tensions are set at the start of a campaign. The slow way of annoying them into hating you will still work if you don't want to start over.

How exactly do you annoy them, Corbomite? I've never noticed anything like a Convoy Raid or Assault mission in allied space.

feargusf, wonders if playing loud Klingon opera will annoy the Roms, what with those ears and all

IIRC you just start running missions in their space. If winning them doesn't seem to lower the DV, try losing them.

Thanks, I'll have to have a go at that. It'll save all of that annoying editing.
