Hehe I bet It would do that in a hurry. I was thinking of looking into some Blunderbuss type guns, As I've always wondered why the barrel was trumpeted at one end. I always thought It might be for loading, but I never found out.

I really am not sure... I seem to recall that they were "shotguns" and they were good for hunting fowl.

I remember my Grandpas rifled musket.  .58 caliber.  With a normal load of powder you could actually "see" the bullet as it moved.  It sure did pack a wallop though.  That is a LOT of lead.

I used to love Blackpowder rifles myself. I never got that great with them, some people managed 3 shots a minute, where I was lucky to ever get 1 and 1/2 . LOL But they where great tools in helping to learn Gun safety.

I can just picture that.58 though that you mentioned.

28 gauge is a larger bore than a .410 I believe.

I collect civil war era rifles.  If you think the .58 cal springfields packed a punch, there were other guns such as the Lorenz and older Harper's ferry guns that were .69 or even greater!  The big older cals weren't good for anything past 50 yards, but whatever you hit you destroyed.  The springfield could really go a long way and still do massive dammage and be fired accurately.  You can get it down to 3per minute, but it takes lots of drill.  In combat you not only had to do 3 per minute, but you had to sustain it as well.

I've seen people do It, but It still just amazes me. The patience and practice those Civil war people went through, really shows something about there Mettle.

from smallest to largest, the common US shotgun sizes:
.410, 28 gauge, 20 gauge, 16 gauge, 12 gauge, 10 gauge.

I believe that the largest legal shotgun gauge in the US is 10 gauge.

I always wondered what the basis was for measuring a shotgun gauge:


Shotgun gauges are determined by the number of lead balls of a given diameter required to make one pound of that size ball. Thus 10 balls of 10 gauge diameter are required to make one pound of such balls, or 20 balls of 20 gauge diameter are required to make one pound, and so forth. This is the traditional, and very old, system. The actual (nominal) bore diameters of the various gauges are as follows: 10 gauge = .775 inch, 12 gauge = .729 inch, 16 gauge = .662 inch, 20 gauge = .615 inch, 28 gauge = .550 inch. The .410 is named for its nominal bore size, and is not a gauge at all.

But is a 28 guage about the same then as a 22 rifle in power,? the only reason I posted is that to begin with is the first time I had ever seen something like that the penny power. A lot of 12 and 10,s get listed but not that kind.

Good lord no. A .22LR has only about 100-120 foot pounds of muzzle energy. A 28 gauge has about 900-1000.

A 28 gauge shotgun is often thought of as a lady's gun - but as Green posted above, the bore diameter is .55 inch.  If you use a rifled slug, that (effectively) becomes a 55 caliber rifle (though with a lower muzzle velocity than you would see from most rifles).  Being on the wrong end of it will still ruin your whole day.

My dad has a 28-gauge shotgun.  Its the best shooting shotgun I've ever seen and is wonderful for field birds.  Quail, pheasent, dove, etc.  Its also a great varmint gun.  I'd recommend picking it up out of the paper if you can.

You guys will never believe this, but my grandfather owned a 4 gauge shotgun.

Sorry not likely, I have never been into guns all that much,I have no desire to even own one, I have qualified with a pistol  and the M16 because the job required it, but that been about it. I was just curious as to what kind of gun and how big it was is all.
